The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed intense chaos on Friday as BJP MLAs staged a massive protest against the passage of the 4% Muslim Quota Bill. The opposition members climbed onto the podium, threw papers at Speaker U T Khader, and shouted slogans, disrupting the Assembly proceedings. Marshals had to be called in to forcibly evict the protesting MLAs, PTI reported.
BJP's Opposition to the Muslim Quota Bill
The 4% Muslim Quota Bill, which grants reservations in public contracts, was passed amid strong opposition from BJP leaders, led by opposition leader R Ashoka. The BJP accused the government of favoring a particular community and announced plans to legally challenge the bill. They labeled it as "unconstitutional" and a move aimed at appeasement politics.
Speaker U T Khader Faces Protest
As the Assembly moved forward with the budget session, BJP MLAs stormed the Speaker's chair, forcing marshals to intervene. The situation escalated as papers and books were thrown at the Speaker’s desk, leading to a complete halt in proceedings.
Budget and Salary Hike Bills Also Passed
Despite the protests, the Assembly also passed the state budget and approved bills to increase the salaries, pensions, and allowances for MLAs, ministers, and the Chief Minister. The opposition accused the ruling government of prioritizing reservations over important issues like economic development.
BJP Alleges a Honey Trap Scandal Cover-Up
Adding to the tension, BJP MLAs were also protesting against an alleged "honey trap" scandal involving a Karnataka minister. They demanded a judicial probe, claiming that the government was using the Muslim quota bill as a distraction from this scandal.
BJP MLA Bharath Shetty’s Statement
BJP MLA Bharath Shetty defended the protest, stating, "Instead of discussing the honey trap scam, the Chief Minister was busy presenting the 4% Muslim quota bill. The government MLAs also threw papers at us; we didn’t harm anybody."
BJP to Challenge the Bill Legally
The BJP has vowed to take the matter to court, arguing that the Muslim quota bill violates constitutional provisions. The opposition leaders warned that such policies could lead to unrest and discrimination in the state.
The Karnataka Legislative Assembly's decision has triggered a political storm, with debates over reservations, governance priorities, and political motives intensifying.
