On April 24, 2025, Karnataka was plunged into grief as families mourned the tragic loss of their loved ones, who were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack that took place on April 22, 2025, in Jammu and Kashmir. Bengaluru’s Mattikere area witnessed heart-wrenching scenes as the family and friends of Bharat Bhushan, a 41-year-old IT professional, gathered to bid him a final farewell. Bhushan, who was among the 26 victims of the attack, was remembered for his warmth and quiet strength. His family, including his wife Sujatha and their three-year-old son, broke down in sorrow as they performed his final rites at their home.

Bharat Bhushan was originally from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh but had made Bengaluru his home. He was in Kashmir on vacation with his family when the attack occurred. According to Bhushan’s mother-in-law, the terrorists intercepted the family, allegedly asking if the victims were Hindu before opening fire. Bharat Bhushan was shot dead in front of his wife and son. His wife, Sujatha, a doctor, and their young son managed to flee the scene, with Sujatha courageously grabbing her husband’s mobile phone and wallet before escaping. The Indian Army later evacuated them to safety.

In a message of support, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya confirmed that he had spoken with Sujatha. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Just now spoke with Mrs. Sujatha, a resident of Mattikere, Bengaluru. Her husband, Sri Bharat Bhushan, was shot dead earlier today in the terror attack. She and her 3-year-old son have survived.” The grief-stricken family was surrounded by loved ones as they performed the final rites, but the sorrow was palpable in every corner of their home.

The Pahalgam terror attack also claimed the life of Manju Nath Rao, a real estate businessman from Shivamogga, Karnataka. Rao, who had traveled to Kashmir with his wife and son, was killed in the attack. His mortal remains were sent back to Shivamogga, where his community awaited to honor him with a solemn farewell.

In Bengaluru, MP Tejasvi Surya and Minister of State for Railways Shri V. Somanna paid their respects at Bengaluru airport when the mortal remains of the victims arrived. The emotional atmosphere at the airport underscored the national tragedy that the attack represented.

The April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which lies in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, left 26 people dead, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. Several others sustained injuries, and the attack has sent shockwaves across the nation. Once a serene and scenic destination, Pahalgam has now become a site of mourning and outrage.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to decisively act against terrorism, swiftly implementing diplomatic and security measures in response to the attack. The Pahalgam attack is one of the deadliest assaults in recent times, and it has drawn widespread condemnation. Many have voiced their anger and frustration, calling for an end to terrorism and better protection for Indian citizens, especially those traveling in conflict zones.

As the nation stands in solidarity with the grieving families, the resolve to bring those responsible for this heinous attack to justice grows stronger. The lives lost in the Pahalgam attack will be remembered, and the families left behind will continue to mourn their loved ones.
