In the aftermath of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people, including foreign nationals, lost their lives, prominent political leaders have spoken out to demand justice for the victims. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, have actively engaged with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and other senior political figures to discuss the situation and the necessary steps forward.
Kharge's Statement: Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his deep sorrow over the Pahalgam terror attack and emphasized the urgent need for justice for the victims' families. In his conversation with Amit Shah, Kharge stressed that the perpetrators must face swift and severe consequences. He urged the central government to open discussions with all political parties to form a unified strategy that would address the ongoing threats in Jammu and Kashmir. Kharge remarked that such acts of violence should not go unanswered, and unity among the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the broader political spectrum, was crucial to ensure peace and security. In his statement, Kharge said, "This cross-border terror attack must be met with a firm and resolute reply."
Rahul Gandhi’s Response: Rahul Gandhi, who is currently in the United States, also condemned the attack and assured the victims' families of his support. Gandhi confirmed that he had been in touch with the Home Minister and Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, along with Tariq Karra, the J&K Congress president, to get updates on the situation. Gandhi called for immediate accountability from the government and questioned the narrative of normalcy being promoted in Jammu and Kashmir by the ruling party. He stated that the Pahalgam attack was a "blot on humanity" and should be met with a strong response. Rahul Gandhi also expressed his solidarity with the victims' families, emphasizing that they deserved not only justice but also the full support of the country during this difficult time.
The Terror Attack: The attack took place in Pahalgam, a renowned tourist destination in Anantnag district, South Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. Terrorists targeted a peaceful tourist location, killing 26 people, including two foreign nationals—one from the UAE and the other from Nepal. Several others were injured. The attack has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, particularly given the gruesome nature of the assault on innocent civilians.
In the wake of the attack, local residents and political leaders have condemned the violence, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah labeling it one of the most horrific attacks on civilians in recent years. The Chief Minister and his administration have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Political and Public Response: The Congress has been vocal in demanding the government take accountability for the attack and to move beyond "hollow claims" of peace in the region. An all-party meeting has been suggested by Congress to ensure that all political parties are aligned in tackling terrorism and improving security for civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. The party condemned the Pahalgam incident as a direct attack on innocent lives and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the victims receive swift justice.
Across Jammu and Kashmir, local citizens have held protests and candlelight marches in solidarity with the victims of the attack. These gatherings serve as a collective stand against the rising terrorism in the region and demand swift justice for the victims.
