Congress chief Kharge urges Centre to release funds for northeast flood relief

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has sharply criticized the Modi government for its inadequate response to the devastating floods affecting northeastern states. Speaking on Monday, Kharge demanded the Centre release more funds to assist states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, and Meghalaya, which have been severely impacted by heavy rains, floods, and landslides.

Kharge referred to the BJP's 2016 promise to make Assam flood-free, pointing out that this pledge remains unfulfilled despite repeated assurances, including by Home Minister Amit Shah in 2022. The Congress leader accused the BJP’s double engine governments at the Centre and Assam of betraying the people of the state by failing to prevent or effectively manage the recurring floods.

Flood impact severe in northeast states

The flood situation across the northeast is dire. Over four lakh people have been affected across more than 20 districts in Assam alone, with ten reported fatalities so far. Several major rivers are in spate, exacerbating the damage caused by continuous heavy rainfall.

States such as Meghalaya, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh are also grappling with landslides and heavy floods, disrupting normal life and causing significant distress to the population.

Kharge urges release of PM CARES Fund

Kharge took a swipe at the Modi government by urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to unlock the PM CARES Fund, claiming that crores of rupees lie unused in the fund without any public audit or transparency. He suggested that releasing this money could provide much-needed financial support to the flood-affected northeastern states.

Political criticism and calls for action

Kharge condemned the BJP government’s focus on diversionary politics instead of addressing urgent developmental issues such as flood control and disaster preparedness. He emphasized that Congress leaders and workers must step up efforts to help affected people and provide relief.

He reiterated the demand that the Centre increase financial aid and resources for flood preparedness and relief efforts in the northeast to mitigate the ongoing crisis.

Outlook

As the monsoon continues, the northeastern states remain vulnerable to further flooding and landslides. Timely release of funds and effective coordination between state and central governments are critical to managing the situation and reducing the impact on millions of people living in these regions.

The political pressure on the Modi government is mounting, with opposition leaders like Kharge demanding greater accountability and immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis caused by these flood
