Tensions continue to escalate during monsoon session, with the Operation Sindhoor issue taking centre stage.
New Delhi, July 28, 2025 – Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday accused the Opposition of deliberately avoiding discussion on Operation Sindhoor during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. His remarks came after repeated disruptions and adjournments in both Houses over the issue.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Rijiju asserted that the government was fully ready to discuss all matters related to the high-profile military and rescue operation, but it was the Opposition parties that were creating hurdles.
“Parliament runs as per rules. The Opposition gave a commitment to engage in debate but is now betraying that very commitment. They are running away from a meaningful discussion,” Rijiju said.
Operation Sindhoor sparks sharp political divide
Operation Sindhoor, launched earlier this year, was a major military-led rescue and strategic coordination mission with international dimensions. While the government hails it as a model of India’s operational and diplomatic capability, the Opposition has raised questions on transparency, execution, and reported mishandlings during the mission.
Over the last week, the Opposition has been demanding a full-day structured debate and the presence of senior Cabinet members including the Defence Minister, whereas the government claims the Opposition is using procedural excuses to avoid real discussion.
Rijiju accuses Opposition of betraying parliamentary integrity
Rijiju's statement comes in the wake of a failed consensus-building exercise over the discussion format.
“We invited them for floor coordination meetings. We offered time, we offered a structured discussion, yet they backtracked. They are misleading the public and wasting Parliament's time,” he added.
Rijiju also hinted that certain elements within the Opposition want to politicise the Army's efforts, which he said was “unfortunate and unpatriotic”.
Opposition hits back: Says Government is stifling serious debate
Opposition leaders, however, have rubbished Rijiju’s claims. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the government is trying to dilute the discussion by avoiding tough questions, especially around civilian casualties and lapses in communication during the operation.
“We are not scared of debate. We want a genuine discussion, not tokenism. Let the Prime Minister come to the House and speak,” Ramesh said.
TMC MP Derek O'Brien also criticised the government’s tactics and said Rijiju was trying to divert attention from “serious governance failures”.
Parliament session increasingly heated
With both sides refusing to budge, the Monsoon Session has seen multiple disruptions, walkouts, and standoffs. Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar have repeatedly urged MPs to allow functioning and maintain decorum.
There are growing concerns that crucial legislative business may get stalled if the standoff over Operation Sindhoor continues. Several pending bills related to defence procurement, national security, and disaster preparedness remain stuck due to the impasse.
Public and military reaction
While the political slugfest continues, voices from civil society and retired armed forces officers have called for mature handling and bipartisan consensus on issues related to national security.
Lt. Gen. (Retd) S.L. Narayanan, speaking to media, said:
“Parliament must debate and dissect. But political grandstanding must not overshadow the valor and sacrifice of those on the ground.”
Conclusion
With Operation Sindhoor becoming a flashpoint of the Monsoon Session, Kiren Rijiju’s comments have further intensified political tensions. Whether Parliament will be able to move past the current deadlock remains to be seen, but what is certain is that public scrutiny is mounting, and both sides will need to navigate the situation with caution and responsibility.
