Farmers from different parts of the country have started arriving at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to take part in the Kisan Mahapanchayat organised by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM). The event, scheduled to be a day-long gathering, aims to highlight the demands of farmers and bring national attention back to issues affecting India’s agricultural community.
According to SKM leaders, the Kisan Mahapanchayat will remain peaceful. They have appealed to all farmers and supporters to join in large numbers while maintaining discipline. The farmers’ body has emphasised that the purpose of the gathering is to draw the government’s attention to pending demands that remain unresolved even after previous farmer protests.
Security has been tightened across central Delhi, with police personnel deployed at Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street, and surrounding areas. Barricades and checkpoints have been set up to manage crowds and ensure smooth traffic movement. Authorities have assured that while farmers have the democratic right to protest, law and order will be strictly maintained.
The Kisan Mahapanchayat comes against the backdrop of lingering issues such as legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, crop insurance reforms, pension for farmers, and withdrawal of certain cases filed during the earlier protests. Farmer leaders argue that these issues continue to burden the agricultural community despite repeated assurances from the government.
SKM representatives stated that this gathering is a continuation of the farmers’ struggle that began with the historic protests against the now-repealed farm laws. They said the movement is not only about specific demands but also about ensuring dignity, justice, and security for farmers who form the backbone of India’s food system.
Many farmers who arrived in Delhi early in the morning expressed that they were motivated by solidarity and a sense of urgency. "We want our voices to be heard. Farming is becoming unsustainable, and unless the government takes concrete steps, farmers will continue to suffer," said one participant from Haryana.
Alongside the Mahapanchayat, volunteers have been arranging langar (community kitchens), water supply, and first-aid services for the protesters. NGOs and farmer unions have come together to ensure that the demonstration remains organised and peaceful.
Political parties are also keeping a close watch on the event, as farmer movements have historically played a significant role in shaping political discourse in India. Analysts suggest that the Kisan Mahapanchayat could influence upcoming policy decisions and even electoral strategies, particularly in agrarian states.
The government, while maintaining its stance that it has already taken steps to support farmers, is expected to monitor the outcome of this Mahapanchayat closely. Officials have indicated that dialogue channels remain open, but stressed that discussions must take place within a framework of mutual respect and responsibility.
For the farmers, however, the Kisan Mahapanchayat is more than just a protest—it is a platform to reaffirm unity, highlight struggles, and demand accountability. As thousands gather at Jantar Mantar, the focus once again shifts to the ongoing challenges of India’s farming community and the search for long-term solutions.
