In a thrilling encounter of the IPL 2025, Delhi Capitals (DC) produced a clinical performance to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by eight wickets, showcasing their dominance with both bat and ball. The match, played at Lucknow’s home ground, saw KL Rahul and Abishek Porel rise to the occasion with well-paced half-centuries, guiding their team to a convincing win.
The game began with LSG choosing to bat first. However, the decision did not quite work in their favour as they managed to post only 159 runs on the board. Despite a steady start from Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (45), the rest of the batting order failed to capitalize. Much was expected from Captain Rishabh Pant, especially given his record INR 27 crore bid in the auction. But Pant surprisingly batted at number seven and departed without scoring, leaving fans disappointed.
Delhi’s bowling unit, on the other hand, put up an exceptional show. Mukesh Kumar was the standout performer, scalping four crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Markram. His performance ensured LSG could not build a strong total and were instead restricted to a par score on a batting-friendly surface.
Chasing 160 runs was never going to be an uphill task for DC, and they made it look like a cakewalk. Abishek Porel, who opened the innings, was in sublime touch, playing with intent and aggression. He scored a fluent 51 off 36 balls, setting the tone early in the powerplay. Post-match, Porel shared insights about their strategy, saying, “I wanted to utilise the powerplay... It was a big ground, so we focused on finding gaps and minimizing dot balls. KL and I were confident that we could make up anytime.”
Once Porel was dismissed, KL Rahul took full control of the chase. Showing poise and maturity, he anchored the innings with an unbeaten 57 off 42 balls, finishing the match in style with a towering six – a symbolic strike against his former team, LSG, who had released him before the 2025 mega-auction. This innings will surely boost Rahul’s confidence as he looks to reclaim his consistency this season.
Axar Patel also played a crucial supporting role, contributing 34 runs off 20 balls*, ensuring that there were no hiccups in the chase. Together, Rahul and Axar stitched a solid partnership that saw DC cross the finish line comfortably.
With this victory, Delhi Capitals registered their sixth win of the season and continued to hold the second spot on the points table, just behind Gujarat Titans, who maintain a slightly better Net Run Rate.
Key Takeaways:
-
KL Rahul's return to form was the biggest takeaway for DC, especially considering his high-profile exit from LSG.
-
Abishek Porel continues to impress, giving DC a dependable top-order batting option alongside Prithvi Shaw.
-
Mukesh Kumar's spell under pressure highlighted the depth and talent in DC’s bowling lineup.
Looking Ahead:
Delhi Capitals are now clearly in contention for a top-two finish, which will give them a crucial advantage in the playoffs. Their next fixture will be closely watched, especially given the consistency they have shown so far. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants need to regroup quickly. Their middle-order inconsistency and questionable captaincy decisions—like sending Pant so late in the batting order—must be addressed if they are to bounce back in the second half of the tournament.
As the league stages intensify, every point matters, and DC’s dominant performance sends a strong message to the rest of the teams: they are serious contenders this season.
