Ladakh recently marked a significant educational milestone with its declaration as achieving full functional literacy, boasting a remarkable literacy rate surpassing 97%. This achievement under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, also known as the New India Literacy Programme (NILP), underscores Ladakh's commitment to empowering its population through foundational literacy, numeracy, and essential life skills.

The announcement was made during a celebratory event at Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra (SSK), Leh, attended by dignitaries including Lieutenant Governor B.D. Mishra, Mr. Sanjay Kumar from the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman of LAHDC, Kargil. The event honored over 500 new literates and volunteer teachers, showcasing the community-driven efforts behind this educational success.

In his address, Lieutenant Governor B.D. Mishra emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and parental responsibility in ensuring children attend school regularly. He encouraged students to aspire not only to seek jobs but also to create opportunities, highlighting the transformative potential of education in shaping Ladakh's future.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar commended Ladakh on its achievement and pledged continued support for enhancing the region's education system. He lauded the ULLAS program's innovative volunteer-driven model, where volunteers use the ULLAS Mobile App to teach non-literates without expecting rewards. This approach has proven highly effective, with the app engaging over 1.29 crore learners and mobilizing 35 lakh volunteer teachers nationwide.

The ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, operational from 2022 to 2027, aligns closely with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on empowering adults aged 15 and above through literacy and essential life skills. Nationally, the program has benefitted more than 77 lakh individuals, marking a significant step towards realizing India's educational goals.

This achievement in Ladakh not only signifies improved literacy rates but also reflects a broader commitment to inclusive education and community participation in driving social change. As Ladakh continues its journey towards educational excellence, initiatives like the ULLAS program stand as a testament to the transformative power of literacy in fostering sustainable development and empowerment.
