  • Lalu Yadav made a sexist comment about Nitish Kumar’s Mahila Samwad Yatra, calling it a "letch at women."
  • Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Sinha and others condemned the remark, calling it unfit for someone in a constitutional position.
  • This is not the first time Lalu has made controversial sexist remarks, with previous incidents drawing criticism.
  • Lalu Prasad Yadav, the chief of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has sparked controversy with a sexist remark directed at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Mahila Samwad Yatra. The yatra, which is aimed at engaging with women directly, was described by Yadav as an initiative where they are going to “letch at women.” This comment, reported by ANI, has drawn sharp criticism from various political figures in Bihar.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha reacted strongly to the remark, emphasizing that such language is unbecoming of someone in a constitutional position. He stated, “These people have defamed Bihar... Bihar wants to be free from such people.” Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary also condemned Yadav’s words, calling them “extremely unfortunate” and suggesting that the veteran leader, who has been dealing with physical health issues, might now also be suffering from mental illness. Chaudhary further called for Yadav to be treated for his remarks.

Bihar Minister Ashok Chaudhary also expressed his disapproval, calling Yadav's comment an attack on the dignity of Bihar. He remarked, “It shows how much envy and jealousy they have towards Nitish Kumar,” adding that it was inappropriate for Yadav, who has seven daughters and several women leaders in his party, to make such a statement. Chaudhary concluded by urging Yadav to apologize to women across the country, calling his words a sign of political bankruptcy.

This is not the first instance of Lalu Yadav making controversial remarks of a sexist nature. In April 2013, while criticizing BJP leader Giriraj Singh’s comments on Sonia Gandhi, Yadav made another remark suggesting that Singh should be “made to wear bangles, vermilion, and bindi,” which was widely viewed as an attack on women.

Additionally, in 2023, Yadav made another controversial remark during an event at the ISKCON temple in Patna. He rhetorically asked if he should have appointed Union Minister of State Nityanand Rai's wife as Chief Minister instead of his own wife, Rabri Devi. This comment was condemned by many for its sexist overtones.

Yadav’s latest remarks have further intensified the debate on the treatment of women in Indian politics and the responsibility of political leaders to set a respectful example. His comments have sparked outrage, and many have called for a public apology, highlighting the need for greater political accountability and a more respectful discourse around gender issues.
