Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India’s technology-driven conglomerate, has recently secured a significant order from the ITER Organization, the globally recognized France-headquartered intergovernmental body responsible for developing the world’s largest nuclear fusion project. ITER, which stands for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, is an ambitious project located in Cadarache, Southern France, with an objective to prove the feasibility of fusion as a sustainable and carbon-free energy source, akin to the natural energy production of the sun. This new order awarded to L&T will facilitate the deployment of advanced welding technology for the assembly of complex parts and ports integral to the project's core—the Vacuum Vessel of the ITER Tokamak reactor.
This collaboration is not new to L&T, as the company has previously contributed to ITER, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when it manufactured and delivered the world’s largest high-vacuum stainless-steel pressure vessel, the Cryostat, well ahead of the scheduled deadline. This component was pivotal for ITER’s Tokamak reactor, which serves as the heart of the fusion project.
Technical Collaboration and Future Prospects
In a bid to strengthen this partnership further, L&T signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ITER Organization. Under this agreement, L&T will assist in the development of state-of-the-art technology to handle the “first-of-a-kind” hardware necessary for fusion experiments. This technology will be used to assemble all fusion-relevant systems inside the Tokamak’s vacuum vessel, a complex operation essential for managing the plasma—the core substance in fusion energy reactions.
According to Mr. Pietro Barabaschi, Director General of ITER, this MoU underlines L&T’s longstanding commitment and reliability in high-tech manufacturing. He remarked that India, represented by L&T, has been a steadfast contributor to ITER’s vision. He added that India’s participation has been crucial for ITER’s technological advancement and applauded L&T's cutting-edge solutions in high-precision fabrication.
In response, Mr. Anil Parab, Whole-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President of L&T’s Heavy Engineering and Valves Division, expressed optimism about the ongoing collaboration. Mr. Parab highlighted that L&T’s involvement in ITER offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase its capabilities on a global stage. He emphasized that the ITER Tokamak reactor aims to demonstrate the viability of nuclear fusion as a clean energy source. This vision aligns with L&T’s expertise in handling complex engineering tasks, as demonstrated by its success in fabricating the Cryostat.
