What's covered under the Article:
-
L&T wins a major order for Rajasthan Rural Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project – Phase II.
-
Another order involves upgrading the Kekri-Sarwar water supply system in Ajmer district.
-
Projects include 5,294-km pipeline work, SCADA automation, and long-term O&M services.
Larsen & Toubro’s Water & Effluent Treatment (WET) business has taken a significant leap forward in bolstering India’s rural water infrastructure. The company announced on June 3, 2025, that it has secured noteworthy Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) orders from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) of Rajasthan, further establishing its stronghold in water supply development across the country.
Strengthening Rajasthan’s Water Supply Network
The highlight of this development is L&T’s acquisition of a critical contract under the Rajasthan Rural Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project – Phase II, Package-1. The comprehensive project covers essential infrastructure aimed at delivering clean, fluorosis-free drinking water to 285 villages and two towns — Surajgarh and Udaipurwati — located in the Jhunjhunu district.
Under this scope, the company will be responsible for:
-
Supply and installation of 5,251 kilometres of transmission and distribution pipelines
-
Construction of 38 ground-level reservoirs (GLRs) with a total capacity of 40 million litres (ML)
-
Installation of 20 pumping stations
-
Development of 132 overhead service reservoirs (OHSRs) with a combined capacity of 25 ML
This massive-scale infrastructure is designed to not only improve water availability and quality but also mitigate the health hazards caused by excess fluoride in drinking water — a persistent issue in parts of Rajasthan.
Ajmer District Water System Overhaul
In addition to the Jhunjhunu project, L&T has bagged another key project related to the upgradation and rehabilitation of the water supply network in the Kekri-Sarwar sector of Ajmer district. This project involves the installation of 43 kilometres of transmission pipelines, aiming to strengthen the current infrastructure and ensure more efficient water delivery to end users.
High-Tech Additions: SCADA and Automation
Both these projects are not just limited to laying pipes and constructing reservoirs. They include advanced electromechanical works, instrumentation, automation systems, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) solutions. This ensures that the projects are in line with modern-day water management standards, allowing real-time monitoring and remote management of water resources.
In addition to construction, L&T will also be responsible for:
-
One-year defects liability period
-
Ten years of operations and maintenance (O&M)
This long-term engagement reflects the trust and reliability that government bodies place in L&T’s execution capabilities.
Track Record in Rajasthan
These repeat orders add to L&T’s impressive portfolio in Rajasthan, where it has already delivered 24 similar water infrastructure projects. The repeated selection by the state government underscores L&T’s proven execution excellence, technical know-how, and ability to manage complex water supply systems at scale.
Why This Matters: Socio-Economic Impact
The scope and scale of these projects are expected to bring tangible improvements to public health, sanitation, and quality of life in the region. For decades, fluorosis — a condition caused by excessive fluoride consumption — has plagued parts of Rajasthan. By mitigating this issue, the project will:
-
Reduce health burdens
-
Ensure sustainable water supply
-
Improve economic productivity in affected regions
Moreover, L&T’s inclusion of automation and SCADA reflects India’s push toward digital transformation of infrastructure, ensuring greater efficiency and transparency.
L&T’s Commitment to Infrastructure Development
With these new orders, L&T reinforces its role as a key enabler of infrastructure development in India, particularly in the water and sanitation space. The company continues to expand its reach with smart, scalable, and sustainable solutions that cater to both rural and urban demands.
Their integrated approach — encompassing design, supply, construction, automation, and long-term maintenance — positions them uniquely among Indian and global infrastructure players.
Conclusion
L&T’s recent wins in Rajasthan are more than just commercial victories; they are infrastructure milestones that promise better living conditions, enhanced health outcomes, and a more resilient water management system for the future.
The projects also underscore the growing importance of public-private collaboration in building critical civic infrastructure. With L&T leading the way in terms of scale, technology, and operational efficiency, India is steadily moving towards achieving universal access to clean and safe drinking water, especially in rural and semi-urban landscapes.
