Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), India’s leading engineering and infrastructure giant, has once again demonstrated its leadership in the country’s most ambitious transport project. On September 15, 2025, the company announced that its Transportation Infrastructure business vertical has secured a large order from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The order is for the construction of 156 route kilometres (RKM) of high-speed ballastless track (Package T1) in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, popularly known as the bullet train project.
The scope of the project is extensive and includes design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of the track works on a Design-Build Lump Sum Price basis. This major package stretches from Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Zaroli village in Gujarat, making it one of the most critical stretches of the project. Within this, around 21 km will be underground track sections, corresponding to civil packages C1 and C2, while the remaining 135 km will be on elevated viaducts (Pkg C3).
This achievement adds to L&T’s growing portfolio in the bullet train project. Back in April 2022, L&T was awarded the T3 package covering 116 km of track from the south of Vadodara city to Sabarmati depot. With the addition of the T1 package, L&T is now responsible for more than 50% of the track-works in the entire MAHSR corridor, further cementing its dominant role in India’s first high-speed rail project.
One of the most significant aspects of the contract is the adoption of Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track Technology, which is considered the gold standard in high-speed rail globally. This advanced technology enables trains to run at speeds of up to 320 kmph, ensuring superior ride quality, longer service life, and ease of maintenance. For passengers, this translates to faster, safer, and more comfortable travel, while for operators it brings higher efficiency and lower lifecycle costs.
Commenting on the win, Mr. S. V. Desai, Whole-time Director & Senior EVP (Civil Infrastructure), L&T, highlighted the importance of rapid technology absorption, indigenisation of plant and machinery, and value engineering in L&T’s successful execution of the earlier T3 package. He expressed confidence that these strengths would once again ensure the timely delivery of the newly awarded T1 package.
L&T’s expertise in ballastless track systems is unmatched in India. The company has a proven track record across different types of modern track technologies, including Plinth Track, Slab Track, Low Vibration Track, Floating Slab Track, and Pre-cast Slab Track. The company is actively executing ballastless track projects in multiple metro systems across India—such as Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai—as well as internationally in Jakarta.
The MAHSR project, often referred to as the bullet train project, is India’s most ambitious transportation initiative, aiming to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad with high-speed rail. Once completed, it will drastically reduce travel time between the two cities to just about 2-3 hours, compared to the current 7-8 hours by conventional rail. The project is being implemented with strong technical collaboration from Japan, ensuring world-class standards of safety and performance.
For L&T, this latest order reinforces its position as a key player in the nation’s high-speed rail journey. The company has consistently showcased its ability to absorb international technologies, localise them, and deliver projects at global benchmarks of quality and speed.
Beyond the bullet train project, L&T continues to be a USD 30 billion Indian multinational, operating across EPC projects, hi-tech manufacturing, and services, with operations spanning multiple geographies. For over eight decades, L&T has built a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and customer focus, making it one of India’s most respected corporates.
This new order not only strengthens L&T’s leadership in transport infrastructure, but also marks another milestone in India’s quest for modern, sustainable, and world-class railway systems. With this, India edges closer to realising its dream of bullet trains that will redefine passenger travel and set a new benchmark in connectivity.
