In a tense moment at a joint press briefing on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron interrupted US President Donald Trump, correcting his misleading statement about Europe’s financial support for Ukraine. The incident occurred as the two leaders discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war on the third anniversary of the invasion.
Trump’s Claim vs. Macron’s Correction
During the discussion, Trump asserted that European nations were merely providing loans to Ukraine, implying that they would eventually recoup their money. However, Macron immediately stepped in to counter this claim.
"No, in fact. To be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort," Macron said, touching Trump's arm to emphasize his point. He further explained, "Like the US, we provided loans, guarantees, and grants. We gave real money, to be clear."
Trump, appearing unfazed, responded with a quip, saying, "If you believe that, it's okay with me."
Ukraine War & Future Talks
Beyond the exchange, Trump and Macron discussed the broader conflict, with Trump suggesting that the war might be nearing an endgame. However, Macron issued a strong warning, stating that any potential peace deal must not amount to Ukraine’s surrender.
The public fact-checking highlighted the growing divide between US and European positions on Ukraine aid, especially as Trump shifts US policy away from direct confrontation with Russia.
