  • Macron's Greenland visit aims to support Danish sovereignty after Trump’s threats to annex the territory sparked European alarm and public backlash.

  • French and Danish leaders will discuss Arctic security, climate change and Greenland’s deeper association with the European Union amid rising tensions.

  • Polls show a majority in France and the US oppose Greenland's annexation, with 43% of French citizens backing military resistance to US aggression.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland on Sunday, June 15, 2025, in a major diplomatic gesture meant to affirm European support for Denmark and reject threats made by former U.S. President Donald Trump to annex the Arctic island.

Greenland, a vast territory with a population of about 57,000, is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which retains control of foreign affairs and defence. While it is not part of the European Union, Greenland maintains a special partnership with the EU.

Context: Trump’s Controversial Threats

The visit follows months of tension sparked by Trump’s direct remarks about "getting" Greenland for the United States—a revival of his earlier presidency’s controversial interest in purchasing the territory. Greenland and Denmark rejected the idea, stressing that only Greenlanders can decide their future.

This unprecedented assertion of possible annexation by a major Western ally prompted public outcry across Europe and drew firm diplomatic reactions. In response, Macron has now become the first foreign leader to set foot in Greenland since Trump’s latest statements.

Macron Sends a Signal

The French president, invited jointly by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, is making a symbolic but powerful move. He said the trip aimed to prevent “preying” on Greenland’s land and resources and reaffirm France's support for its Arctic allies.

“France has stood by us since the first statements about taking our land emerged. This support is both necessary and gratifying,”

Although Macron refrained from directly naming Trump, his office made clear that the visit itself is a message of European resolve.

European Solidarity and Arctic Strategy

Macron’s itinerary includes a visit to Nuuk (the capital), a hydropower station funded by the EU, and a retreating glacier, reflecting joint French-Greenlandic concerns on climate change, sustainability, and Arctic security.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, speaking on RTL radio, stressed:

“Greenland is a European territory and it is normal that Europe and notably France show their interest.”

Though Greenland is outside the EU, Macron’s team said the visit would discuss enhancing Greenland's EU association partnership, indicating a strategic pivot to deeper continental ties.

Public Opinion and Defence Signals

According to a new IFOP poll for NYC.eu, released Saturday:

  • 77% of French citizens oppose the idea of a U.S. annexation of Greenland.

  • 56% of Americans also disapprove of any such action.

  • Notably, 43% of the French public would support the use of French military power to prevent a U.S. seizure of Greenland.

In a clear nod to bolstering military preparedness, Denmark has placed orders for French-made surface-to-air missiles, marking a shift in Copenhagen’s traditional defence orientation, which has historically leaned towards the United States.

Diplomatic Dynamics: France as Europe's Military Anchor

Florian Vidal, an analyst at the Paris-based IFRI think tank, said the situation underscores France's emerging role as Europe’s defence pillar.

“From a Nordic point of view, France is a military power that counts,”
Florian Vidal, IFRI

He added:

“The Trump administration's more aggressive posture is a shock that makes the French vision of Europe—one that is more autonomous—appear more reasonable for Denmark.”

Macron’s message echoes his long-standing push for European strategic autonomy, especially in a multipolar world where alliances are shifting.

Why Greenland Matters

Greenland holds vast strategic and economic significance:

  • It occupies a key location in the Arctic, which is fast becoming a battleground of geopolitical and climate interests.

  • It contains rare earth minerals vital for green technologies.

  • Its melting ice caps offer insights into global climate change.

Macron’s visit also highlights a growing French and European effort to maintain influence in the Arctic, especially as China, Russia, and now the U.S. attempt to expand their footprints there.

Conclusion: A United Front Against Unilateralism

Macron’s Greenland visit represents a calculated response to U.S. unpredictability, symbolising France’s commitment to multilateralism, sovereignty, and climate security.

As tensions simmer between traditional allies, and as public and political resistance to Trump-era geopolitics grows, Macron’s trip may be a blueprint for future European diplomacy—stronger, more assertive, and built on partnerships over pressure.
