What's covered under the Article:

  1. Maharashtra government revises school timings to morning hours due to extreme heat.

  2. Primary and secondary schools will operate from 7:00 am to 11:45 am to ensure safety.

  3. Severe heat wave conditions in Vidarbha, with temperatures exceeding 40°C.

In light of the intense heat wave conditions sweeping across Maharashtra, the state government has taken a proactive step by revising school timings to ensure the safety and well-being of students. As per the circular issued by the Maharashtra School Education Department, all primary schools will now operate between 7:00 am and 11:15 am, while secondary schools will function from 7:00 am to 11:45 am. This decision applies to all schools across the state, regardless of their management type—government, private, or aided institutions.

Reason Behind the Change

The decision was prompted by rising temperatures across various regions of Maharashtra, particularly in Vidarbha, where temperatures have soared above 40 degrees Celsius. On March 28, 2025, several areas recorded extreme heat, making it difficult for students to cope with the harsh weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also predicted that Bhandara is likely to experience temperatures of 41 degrees Celsius with a minimum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius.

Heat Wave Impact Across Maharashtra

The Vidarbha region has been experiencing a severe heat wave for the past few days, with temperatures consistently crossing the 40-degree mark. Nagpur, Chandrapur, Akola, and Amravati have reported exceptionally high temperatures, making it dangerous for children and vulnerable groups to be exposed to extreme heat for prolonged periods.

To address these concerns, the Maharashtra School Education Department has directed all schools to shift to morning timings to minimize heat exposure for students, ensuring they return home before the temperatures peak in the afternoon.

IMD Weather Prediction and Potential Relief

While the current heat wave conditions are expected to persist, the IMD has predicted possible unseasonal rainfall over the next three to four days. According to the forecast, regions including Marathwada, north Maharashtra, and central Maharashtra, including Vidarbha, may witness some light showers that could provide temporary relief from the scorching heat.

The possibility of rainfall has brought a glimmer of hope for residents, especially those in Vidarbha, who have been grappling with the relentless heat. However, even with this forecast, the state government remains cautious and has urged schools to continue operating in morning shifts until further notice.

Government's Proactive Measures

The Maharashtra government has been closely monitoring the weather situation and has ensured that timely decisions are made to safeguard public health, especially that of children. The decision to change school timings aligns with the state's focus on prioritizing the safety of students. The authorities have also advised parents and school management to ensure that children remain hydrated and wear light clothing to minimize heat-related health risks.

To further mitigate heat-related dangers, the Education Department has also recommended that:

  • Schools provide adequate hydration facilities during school hours.

  • Students should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.

  • Proper ventilation should be ensured in classrooms to prevent heat exhaustion.

Implementation Across All Schools

The revised timings will be implemented uniformly across all schools in Maharashtra, including government, private, and aided schools. This directive aims to ensure that students are not exposed to the sweltering heat, reducing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes and dehydration.

Parents and Teachers Welcome the Decision

The decision has been welcomed by parents and educators, who have expressed relief that children’s safety is being prioritized. Parents have expressed concerns over the safety of students traveling in the afternoon heat and are thankful that the state government has taken timely action to adjust school schedules.

Teachers and school administrators have also supported the move, noting that teaching in cooler morning hours is more conducive to effective learning and concentration.

Future Monitoring and Adjustments

The Maharashtra government has assured that the situation will be continuously monitored, and any further changes to the school schedule will be communicated based on weather updates and expert recommendations. Authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of students during this period of extreme heat.

For now, students, parents, and teachers can take solace in the fact that safety measures are being prioritized, and the government remains vigilant in its efforts to protect public health. The revised school timings will remain in place until there is a significant improvement in weather conditions across the state.
