What's covered under the Article:

  • Mahavatar Narsimha continues its blockbuster run, crossing Rs 180.90 crore in just 19 days since release, becoming a surprise animated hit.

  • Saiyaara maintains strong momentum with Rs 321.35 crore total in 26 days, despite being a romantic drama led by debut actors.

  • Kingdom, Son of Sardaar 2, and Dhadak 2 show limited weekday gains, struggling to draw large audiences in Indian theatres.

The Indian box office witnessed a mixed performance on 12 August 2025, with only a couple of films truly managing to pull audiences into theatres. While most ongoing releases are struggling to leave an impact, Ashwin Kumar’s Mahavatar Narsimha and Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara have continued to dominate collections and retain strong occupancy rates, proving their staying power in the market.

Mahavatar Narsimha maintains blockbuster momentum

Released on 25 July 2025, Mahavatar Narsimha has turned out to be one of the most unexpected box office sensations of the year. This fantasy animated drama follows the journey of young Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu, leading to the divine incarnation of Narsimha.

Produced by Kleem Productions and presented by Hombale Films, the film has crossed ₹180.90 crore within just 19 days of release, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Its performance has defied the traditional limitations of animated films in India, showing that strong storytelling and cultural roots can connect with audiences across all age groups.

The visuals, music, and emotional depth have helped sustain interest, allowing it to hold screens and remain competitive even against live-action commercial films.

Saiyaara crosses ₹321 crore in 26 days

Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara, featuring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has been another bright spot in an otherwise dull season for Indian cinema. Despite entering its fourth week, the film continues to post impressive numbers.

According to Sacnilk, the film collected ₹1.35 crore on its fourth Monday and saw a slight increase to ₹1.50 crore on Tuesday, pushing its total to ₹321.35 crore. With a production budget of only ₹50-60 crore, Saiyaara has emerged as a massive blockbuster.

The film’s strong run can be attributed to its heartfelt love story, chart-topping music, and word-of-mouth promotion. Even with stiff competition from action and fantasy genres, Saiyaara has managed to carve a space in audience hearts.

Kingdom slows after ₹50 crore mark

The Telugu-language spy action thriller Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, has crossed the ₹50 crore milestone with a total of ₹51.29 crore in India. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film recorded an overall 12.46% Telugu occupancy on Tuesday, collecting ₹0.28 crore.

While it started strong in its opening week, Kingdom has seen a slowdown in weekday collections, hinting that its theatrical run may be nearing its end.

Son of Sardaar 2 sees weekday boost

The Ajay Devgn–Mrunal Thakur starrer Son of Sardaar 2 witnessed a minor weekday improvement. On Day 12, the film earned ₹1.28 crore, compared to ₹1.1 crore the day before, taking its total to ₹44.38 crore across India.

Directed with a blend of comedy and action, the film boasts a large ensemble including Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Kubbra Sait, Neeru Bajwa, and Deepak Dobriyal. Despite the star power, the movie has not been able to match the box office pull of its predecessor.

Dhadak 2 continues weak trend

Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, is struggling to make an impact at the box office. Directed by Shazia Iqbal and produced under Dharma Productions, the romantic drama has collected only ₹21.65 crore in 12 days.

The film is a remake of the acclaimed Tamil drama Pariyerum Perumal (2018) and deals with caste-based discrimination. However, it faced a tough release window, clashing directly with Son of Sardaar 2, which further hampered its performance.

Box Office Outlook

With Independence Day just around the corner, industry insiders expect a boost in theatre footfalls for upcoming releases. However, as of now, Mahavatar Narsimha and Saiyaara remain the only films drawing consistent audience interest. Other titles will need strong promotions, festive offers, or critical acclaim to reverse their downward trend.

The coming weeks will reveal whether these current leaders can extend their dominance or if fresh releases will shake up the standings in the Indian box office charts.
