Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has embarked on a significant five-day official visit to India, commencing on October 6, 2024. Upon his arrival, he was honored with a ceremonial guard of honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was warmly received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit is pivotal as it signifies the continued commitment to strengthening ties between India and the Maldives.

After the ceremonial welcome, President Murmu and President Muizzu took the time to introduce each other to their respective ministers and delegations, enhancing diplomatic engagement. In a notable gesture of respect, President Muizzu also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial in Rajghat, where he was accompanied by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. This act symbolizes the strong historical ties and mutual respect between the two nations.

EAM Jaishankar's Meeting

Before the formal meetings with Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar engaged with President Muizzu. The discussions centered on fostering the India-Maldives relationship, with Jaishankar expressing his appreciation for Muizzu’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. He shared his optimism about the upcoming discussions between President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing the potential for renewed cooperation.

About the Visit

This visit marks President Muizzu's first bilateral trip to India since taking office. He had previously visited India in June 2024 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. During his current visit, President Muizzu will meet with President Droupadi Murmu and hold discussions with Prime Minister Modi on a range of topics, including bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.

In addition to his meetings in New Delhi, President Muizzu is scheduled to visit Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he will participate in various business events aimed at fostering economic cooperation between the two nations.
