In a significant political statement, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has dismissed the possibility of a pre-poll alliance with the Congress party ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, according to Trinamool Congress (TMC) sources. She asserted that TMC alone is capable of securing a two-thirds majority and forming the government for the fourth consecutive term.
"TMC Alone is Enough to Win" - Mamata Banerjee
Addressing TMC lawmakers in a closed-door meeting ahead of the West Bengal Assembly’s budget session, Banerjee criticized the Congress party’s electoral strategy. She pointed out that Congress failed to support AAP in Delhi, and AAP did not back Congress in Haryana, which resulted in the BJP's victory in both states.
"Everyone should be together. But Congress has nothing in Bengal. I will fight alone. We alone are enough," a TMC source quoted Banerjee as saying.
She also expressed confidence that TMC will retain power in 2026, securing more than two-thirds of the seats in the Assembly.
Call for Opposition Unity Against BJP
While ruling out a Congress alliance in Bengal, Banerjee stressed that like-minded opposition parties should coordinate at the national level to ensure BJP’s defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and beyond.
"If opposition parties fail to come together, it will be difficult for the INDIA bloc to stop the BJP at the national level," she warned.
Banerjee also accused the BJP of attempting to manipulate the voter list in Bengal by including foreigners’ names, urging TMC MLAs to stay vigilant.
TMC Restructuring Before Elections
To strengthen the party ahead of the elections, Banerjee announced an internal reshuffle within TMC, spanning from the state level to the booth level.
She directed MLAs to submit three recommendations for each party post to senior TMC leader Arup Biswas by February 25. The move is expected to energize the party’s grassroots organization ahead of the crucial 2026 election.
West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: Key Political Battle
The West Bengal Assembly elections are scheduled for 2026, with TMC aiming for a fourth straight term under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Meanwhile, the BJP has been actively working to challenge the TMC’s dominance, hoping to expand its electoral footprint in the state.
With Banerjee ruling out an alliance with Congress, the political landscape in Bengal is set for a fierce battle between TMC and BJP, while Congress and CPI(M) struggle to remain relevant.
