West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India, terming it a “Tughlaqi Commission” amid an ongoing dispute over the suspension of officials in the State. The remarks came after the West Bengal government suspended seven officials for alleged serious misconduct linked to the SIR process, following a six-month tussle between the State administration and the constitutional body.

The Chief Minister also made it clear that her government would extend support to officials who, according to her, were being unfairly targeted by the Election Commission.

The Suspension of Officials

After months of back-and-forth between the State administration and the Election Commission, the West Bengal government suspended seven officials on charges of serious misconduct during the SIR exercise.
