In a fresh political controversy that has stirred debates within the opposition camp, senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has once again taken a critical stance towards his own party’s leadership. This time, he has directly questioned the role of Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the INDIA bloc, urging him to step aside and allow a regional leader to take charge.

The remarks have triggered sharp reactions within the Congress and the broader opposition alliance, officially known as the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, commonly referred to as the INDIA bloc. Aiyar’s comments come at a time when the opposition alliance is trying to maintain unity and prepare for upcoming electoral battles against the BJP.

Aiyar’s Call for Leadership Change

Speaking candidly about the Congress party’s recent electoral performance, Aiyar did not mince words. He pointed to the party’s setbacks in recent elections and suggested that the current leadership model may need reconsideration. According to him, it may be beneficial for the alliance if Rahul Gandhi allows a prominent regional leader to assume the top position within the INDIA bloc.

According to Aiyar, the Congress made a mistake in not adequately accommodating Mamata Banerjee earlier, which, he claimed, weakened the party’s position.

Masood emphasised that the INDIA bloc requires a leader with national appeal, organisational strength, and ideological clarity—qualities he believes Rahul Gandhi possesses. According to him, replacing Gandhi at this stage could create confusion within the alliance and weaken its momentum.

While some see Aiyar’s remarks as constructive criticism aimed at strengthening the alliance, others view them as unnecessary public dissent that could harm unity.

This is not the first time Mani Shankar Aiyar has stirred controversy with his remarks. Recently, he made headlines by suggesting that Pinarayi Vijayan was well-positioned to continue as Kerala’s Chief Minister.

His comments came during an international seminar titled Vision 2031: Development and Democracy, where he praised Vijayan’s governance model and emphasised the need to strengthen Kerala’s Panchayati Raj system. The seminar was inaugurated by Pinarayi Vijayan himself.

Aiyar went a step further by expressing confidence that Vijayan would be the next Chief Minister as well. This statement raised eyebrows within Congress ranks, as the party is gearing up for Assembly elections in Kerala and hopes to challenge the ruling Left Democratic Front.

In his speech, Aiyar advocated for amendments to state laws to further reinforce Kerala’s reputation as a strong Panchayati Raj state. He referred to insights from Thomas Isaac and planning reports, suggesting that governance reforms should be based on practical experience and institutional learning.
