Manipur Teacher Burned Alive, Supreme Court Investigates CM's Alleged Role in Violence
Team FS
09/Nov/2024

On November 7, 2024, violence erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam district, leading to the brutal killing of Zosangkim Hmar, a 31-year-old teacher from the Hmar community. Alleged Meitei militants are suspected of shooting her before burning her alive, escalating the already fraught ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The tragic death of Hmar has drawn significant attention as the latest in a series of violent clashes that have gripped Manipur for months.
The Attack in Jiribam District
On the night of November 7, militants reportedly targeted Zairon Hmar village in Jiribam. The violence was swift and brutal, with Zosangkim Hmar shot, sexually assaulted, and then set on fire by the attackers. She was a teacher and mother of three, making her death even more poignant for her family and community. This killing comes amid ongoing ethnic violence, with attacks on both tribal and Meitei communities, leaving thousands displaced and dozens dead.
Supreme Court’s Inquiry Into CM’s Alleged Role
In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has agreed to examine audio tapes that allegedly implicate Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in the violence. These tapes reportedly suggest that the CM may have been involved in inciting violence, including arming militant groups and supporting the attacks on the Kuki-Zo community. The investigation into these tapes could have serious political and legal ramifications for the state’s leadership.
The decision to investigate the alleged involvement of N Biren Singh comes amid growing concerns about ethnic violence and the involvement of state actors in fueling the unrest. The Supreme Court has shown keen interest in addressing these allegations, and the tapes are expected to play a central role in the ongoing investigation.
Rising Ethnic Tensions and Social Unrest
The brutal killing of Zosangkim Hmar and the Supreme Court's scrutiny of N Biren Singh’s alleged role have deepened ethnic tensions in Manipur. Over the past months, both the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have been embroiled in violent clashes, leading to displacement and widespread destruction. The death toll from these clashes has risen, and over 13,000 homes have been reported damaged.
The violence has severely affected daily life in Manipur, with families caught in the crossfire and communities torn apart. Social and legal tensions continue to rise as accusations of state involvement in inciting the violence mount.
Political and Legal Implications
The case has serious political implications, especially with the Supreme Court examining the evidence. If the tapes are found to be authentic, it could lead to serious consequences for N Biren Singh, who has already faced criticism from various quarters for his handling of the violence in the state.
On the other hand, supporters of the CM argue that his role in maintaining law and order has been unjustly politicized. They suggest that the violence in Manipur is more complex, involving multiple militant groups and longstanding ethnic grievances.
Ongoing Tensions and Calls for Justice
The death of Zosangkim Hmar and the allegations surrounding Manipur's Chief Minister have reignited calls for justice and a resolution to the ethnic conflict. The situation remains volatile, with government responses and court rulings expected to have significant impacts on both the state and national level.
For now, the Supreme Court's investigation will be pivotal in determining the truth behind the allegations and in addressing the violence that continues to ravage Manipur. The outcome will also be crucial in shaping the future of the state’s leadership and its efforts to reconcile the warring communities.
