• 21 Tangkhul Naga people, including women and children, were released after being held captive by a Kuki group in Ukhrul district.

• Two Kuki men, missing after a shooting incident linked to anti-poppy drives, were found dead in Kamjong district.

• The clash follows tensions over Naga volunteers’ anti-poppy cultivation drive, highlighting ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur.

In Manipur’s Ukhrul district, 21 Tangkhul Naga individuals, including women and children, were released by their captors on Thursday (March 12, 2026), after being held captive by a Kuki group the previous day.

The incident occurred on the Imphal-Ukhrul Road, a key route connecting Ukhrul with the state capital, Imphal, triggering renewed tension in the region.

Discovery of Kuki Men’s Bodies

In a related development, the bodies of two Kuki men who had gone missing during a previous clash were recovered from a jungle in Kamjong district early Thursday morning.

The deaths occurred hours after the release of the Nagas, suggesting a series of retaliatory attacks and rising ethnic tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities.

Background: Anti-Poppy Drive and Clashes

The conflict reportedly escalated following an anti-poppy cultivation drive conducted by Naga volunteers on March 11, 2026.

During this operation, two Kuki cultivators went missing, and another sustained bullet injuries, which prompted the Kuki group to intercept and hold the Naga travellers.

Authorities fear the cycle of retaliation could further destabilise the area if tensions are not managed swiftly.

Manipur’s Ethnic Tensions

Manipur has a history of ethnic clashes between Naga and Kuki communities, often triggered by land, resource, or security issues.

Local administration and security forces have been monitoring the situation, but incidents like this underscore the fragile peace in the hill districts.

The government is likely to increase patrolling and mediation efforts to prevent further escalation.
