Key insights into party-wise seat distribution, early results, and voter trends in the 2025 federal election.
As millions of Canadians cast their votes on April 29, 2025, the results of the federal election are still unfolding, with Mark Carney’s Liberal Party projected to win. Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, is poised to become the next Prime Minister, following Justin Trudeau's resignation earlier in the year. The election has become a referendum on both Canadian leadership and the influence of US President Donald Trump, whose rhetoric about Canada's economy and sovereignty has sparked a response from Canadian voters. The polls have now closed in most regions, and the election race remains tight.
As of the latest updates, the Liberal Party is leading with 158 seats, followed by the Conservative Party with 147. However, the total number of seats needed to form a majority government is 172, making it unclear whether the Liberals will secure a majority or have to govern with a minority. The Bloc Québécois, which advocates for Quebec separatism, has captured 25 ridings, while the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Green Party have limited representation. The People's Party of Canada (PPC) and other smaller parties have yet to win any seats.
The Canadian election has seen sharp competition between the Liberals and Conservatives, with the latter led by Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre, who has campaigned with bold stances akin to Trump, has had his own challenges, particularly in the wake of Trump’s controversial remarks about Canada. These remarks have energized the Liberals and complicated the Conservative campaign, as Poilievre faces increasing scrutiny for his alignment with Trump-like rhetoric.
Carney's strong backing reflects the Canadian public's preference for stable leadership amid rising tensions. While Carney, a seasoned banker, has only recently entered politics, his credibility on economic matters has strengthened his position. His campaign promises to tackle the challenges facing the country, including rising living costs, which became a key issue under Trudeau’s leadership. The final result remains in flux, as votes continue to be counted and projections update, but as it stands, Carney’s Liberals remain the frontrunner in the 2025 Canadian election.
