A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Myanmar struck today, causing massive destruction across the region. The tremors reached Bangkok, Thailand, leading to the collapse of a 30-storey under-construction skyscraper meant for government offices. 43 workers are currently trapped, and hundreds are feared injured as rescue teams rush to the scene.
Disaster Strikes Bangkok
The under-construction government skyscraper in the Bang Sue district crumbled in a matter of seconds, reducing it to rubble and twisted metal. According to Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bang Sue district, people were heard crying for help beneath the debris. The authorities are still working to determine the exact number of casualties.
Thai Government Declares Emergency
The earthquake also caused major disruptions in Bangkok, leading to the suspension of metro and light rail services. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra immediately declared a state of emergency, canceling her visit to Phuket to attend an urgent meeting regarding the crisis.
Impact Across the Region
The quake was also felt in China’s Yunnan province, where Beijing’s quake agency recorded it at 7.9 magnitude. Myanmar, located near the Sagaing Fault, has historically been prone to earthquakes, with six major tremors above 7.0 magnitude recorded between 1930 and 1956.
Ongoing Rescue Operations
Rescue teams and emergency personnel are working tirelessly to locate and extract the trapped workers from the collapsed structure. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and disaster relief teams are leading search and rescue operations, utilizing heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to navigate the debris.
The public has been advised to stay alert, as aftershocks are possible. Authorities are also assessing structural integrity in surrounding buildings to prevent further incidents.
