Key Points:

  1. Delhi gears up for Lok Sabha elections on May 25 with a significant security deployment.
  2. A total of 33,000 police officers, 51 paramilitary companies, and 17,500 Home Guards will ensure a smooth voting process.
  3. Enhanced surveillance measures include CCTV on borders and drone monitoring in sensitive areas.

On May 25, 2024, Delhi will participate in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, witnessing a fierce political contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INDIA bloc, which includes the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. To ensure the elections proceed without incident, a massive security operation has been set up in the national capital.

Sanjay Sehrawat, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the Delhi Police's election cell, has confirmed that a robust security arrangement is in place. The deployment includes 33,000 police personnel, 51 paramilitary companies, and 17,500 Home Guards drawn from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh. These forces will be stationed across the city's 2,628 polling booths, of which 429 have been identified as highly sensitive.

To further bolster security, Delhi Police have introduced high-tech surveillance measures. Drones will monitor illegal activities in sensitive areas, providing real-time data to the control centers. In addition, CCTV cameras have been installed at interstate borders, ensuring continuous monitoring. Given that both Delhi and Haryana are voting on the same day, a joint task force of Delhi Police and Haryana Police will be stationed at the Delhi-Haryana border to conduct thorough checks and prevent any unlawful activities.

DCP Sehrawat highlighted the extensive preparation undertaken for the election. "Delhi Police has completed its preparations for the elections on May 25. With 33,000 policemen and 51 paramilitary companies, we are ensuring maximum security. Moreover, 17,500 Home Guards from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh will aid in the efforts," he stated. He also emphasized the deployment of CCTV cameras on interstate borders, which will be monitored around the clock.

A significant aspect of the election security strategy involves financial monitoring. During the campaign period, Delhi Police seized over ₹14 crore in cash, which is currently under investigation to determine its intended use. This seizure underscores the vigilance of the authorities in curbing illegal financial activities related to the elections.

The single-phase election in Delhi on May 25 will see voters casting their ballots for seven seats: Chandni Chowk, East Delhi, New Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, South Delhi, and West Delhi. The polling will commence at 7 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. across 58 constituencies in eight states and union territories. The vote counting is scheduled for June 4, followed by the announcement of the election results.

This election cycle has been marked by intense competition, particularly between the BJP and the INDIA bloc, reflecting the high stakes involved. The security measures are aimed at ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process, free from intimidation or fraud. The presence of a large contingent of security personnel, coupled with advanced technological surveillance, is expected to provide a safe environment for voters.

In summary, Delhi's preparation for the Lok Sabha elections on May 25 is comprehensive and robust. The deployment of 33,000 police officers, 51 paramilitary companies, and 17,500 Home Guards, along with advanced surveillance measures like drones and CCTV cameras, underscores the authorities' commitment to maintaining law and order. With these preparations in place, Delhi is poised for a secure and orderly election day.
