Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) launched a sharp critique of the recent UP Police recruitment drive, calling it a routine administrative task that was needlessly glorified.
She also raised serious concerns about community representation, fairness of the process, and the quality of training for newly inducted recruits.
Routine Work, Not an Achievement: Mayawati
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati posted in Hindi that the recent police recruitment was being projected as a landmark achievement when in fact, it was a routine government exercise meant to prevent a backlog in staffing.
“The recent police recruitment in Uttar Pradesh has been portrayed as if something extraordinary has been achieved, while in reality, such recruitment drives are part of routine administrative work,” she remarked.
Community Representation Questioned
She expressed doubts about fair representation for all communities under the banner of ‘Sarv Samaj’, asking whether inclusive recruitment norms had been followed. Her statement implied that the process may have been biased or exclusionary toward certain social groups.
“The real concern among people is whether proper representation was given to Sarv Samaj or all sections in the recruitment and whether the recruits would receive appropriate training,” she stated.
Concerns Over Training and Future Readiness
Beyond recruitment, Mayawati also raised alarms over the quality and adequacy of training to be provided to over 60,000 new recruits inducted into the UP Police. She hinted at potential gaps in preparedness and ineffectiveness in law enforcement unless proper training standards are ensured.
Comparison with BSP’s Tenure
In a pointed reference to her own term as Chief Minister, Mayawati reminded that her government had once created 1.20 lakh new police posts in a single move, with a transparent and fair recruitment process that was praised for being free of corruption and political interference.
“During my government, we created 1.20 lakh new posts in one go and made police recruitment a transparent and honest process. The resulting law and order environment benefited all communities equally,” she said.
BSP’s Legacy on Law and Order
Mayawati emphasised that her administration’s inclusive law enforcement approach helped maintain communal harmony and safety, without favouritism or discrimination, something she alleges is “sorely lacking” under the current regime.
Her comments reflect an effort to reassert BSP’s credibility on law and order governance, while also tapping into public dissatisfaction regarding recruitment fairness and training efficacy.
Government’s Grand Ceremony Criticised
On Sunday (June 15, 2025), the Uttar Pradesh Government handed over appointment letters to more than 60,000 police recruits in a lavish ceremony attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The event was publicised heavily, with leaders hailing the recruitment as a major milestone for improving law enforcement capabilities in India’s most populous state.
However, Mayawati’s remarks sought to cut through the government’s narrative, portraying the spectacle as politically motivated optics rather than a substantive administrative achievement.
Political Implications
Mayawati’s reaction is being seen as part of a broader strategy to reclaim her party’s traditional support base, especially among Dalits and marginalised communities, who have expressed concerns about fair opportunities in government employment.
By raising questions about transparency, training standards, and communal representation, she is positioning the BSP as a watchdog of justice and trying to build momentum ahead of upcoming elections.
Public Reactions and Next Steps
The ruling BJP has not yet officially responded to Mayawati’s remarks. However, political analysts suggest that the BSP chief's pointed criticism may resonate with job-seeking youth, aspiring civil servants, and community groups seeking equal opportunity in State services.
Her emphasis on transparent governance and inclusive representation also taps into ongoing national debates about reservation policies, social equity, and public recruitment standards.
As the issue gains traction, further statements or rebuttals from the Uttar Pradesh Government or the BJP leadership may follow in the coming days.
