Amid rising tensions between Mexico and the United States, the Mexican government has deployed 10,000 National Guard officers to its northern border. The move comes in response to former US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose crippling tariffs on Mexico unless it takes stronger measures to curb illegal migration and fentanyl smuggling.
Mexican Troops Arrive in Border Cities
The Mexican National Guard and Army trucks were seen patrolling border regions, including Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana, two of the busiest entry points between the two countries. Masked and heavily armed officers were spotted removing makeshift ladders and ropes hidden near the border, commonly used by migrants to scale barriers.
According to official reports, 1,650 troops were sent to Ciudad Juárez, while 1,949 personnel were deployed to Tijuana, making them the largest recipients of reinforcements. The remaining troops are spread across other critical points along the US-Mexico border.
Trump Declares Emergency at the Border
Despite migration levels and fentanyl overdoses declining over the past year, Trump declared an emergency at the US-Mexico border, citing security concerns and drug trafficking.
Trump had previously threatened Mexico with tariffs but agreed to delay sanctions after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to send troops to the border. In return, the United States promised to combat illegal gun trafficking into Mexico, which has fueled cartel violence and human smuggling operations.
US Thanks Mexico for Cooperation
During his trip through Latin America, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged Mexico’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing migration and border security.
The negotiation led by Sheinbaum has been seen as a significant diplomatic win, demonstrating her ability to navigate Trump’s foreign policy pressures. Some had doubted her capability to handle US-Mexico relations as effectively as her predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Future of US-Mexico Border Relations
With the US election season approaching, border security and bilateral trade agreements remain key issues. The Mexican government’s swift response to Trump’s tariff threats suggests a commitment to maintaining economic stability while addressing security concerns.
