A tragic helicopter crash occurred in Madison County, Mississippi, on March 10, 2025, leading to the deaths of three medical personnel. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. near Highway 43, close to the Natchez Trace Parkway, north of Jackson, the state’s capital. The helicopter was part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) AirCare service and had just taken off from St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, carrying only the pilot and two crew members—there were no patients aboard at the time of the crash.
Details of the Incident
The helicopter, operated by Med-Trans, a company contracted to handle UMMC's AirCare flights, crashed approximately 27 minutes into its flight. UMMC confirmed the deaths of all three individuals aboard, although their identities were withheld to respect family privacy. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves expressed his condolences on social media, calling it “a tragic reminder of the risks Mississippi’s first responders take every day to keep us safe,” and added that the state would “never forget the sacrifice of these heroes.”
AirCare Service’s Role and Operations
The UMMC AirCare program, which started in 1996, is one of the busiest medical helicopter services in the country, responsible for transporting critically ill patients across Mississippi. Before this incident, AirCare had completed over 18,000 patient transports without any FAA-reportable accidents. AirCare's services are crucial for providing rapid transportation to patients in need of urgent medical care, with helicopters stationed across the state to respond to emergency situations. The service has a significant role in emergency medical transportation, including airlifting both adults and children to hospitals capable of handling severe conditions.
Investigation and Response
Following the crash, law enforcement and first responders were quickly dispatched to the site. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the cause of the crash. The UMMC also issued a statement confirming that families of the victims are being contacted, and more details will be provided as soon as possible.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those in the emergency medical service field. The families of the victims, as well as the larger Mississippi community, are mourning the loss of these dedicated professionals who put their lives at risk every day to save others.
