In a shocking act of political violence, a violent mob stormed the historic residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at Dhanmondi 32 on Wednesday evening. The mob, enraged after an online speech by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, broke into the premises and vandalized the property, leaving it in ruins.
According to Dhaka Tribune, the protesters had earlier threatened to demolish the residence at 9 PM (local time) but arrived an hour earlier. Forcibly breaking the gates, they charged inside, shouting slogans against Sheikh Hasina and calling for the eradication of Mujibism. Some even demanded the execution of Sheikh Hasina, escalating the political turmoil in Bangladesh.
Protesters Destroy Historic Landmarks
Once inside, rioters climbed to the second floor, armed with hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks. They smashed portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, destroyed furniture, and defaced the walls. The damage left the house unrecognizable, as shattered glass, broken frames, and wrecked interiors bore testimony to the destructive rampage.
Declaring the house a symbol of authoritarianism and fascism, the attackers vowed to eliminate any trace of Mujibism, intensifying Bangladesh’s political divide.
Dhanmondi 32: A Repeated Target
This is not the first time the Dhanmondi 32 residence has been targeted. On August 5 last year, following the collapse of the Awami League, a furious mob attacked the house, setting parts of it on fire. The repeated assaults on this historic property reflect deepening political divisions and a growing wave of unrest in Bangladesh.
Authorities Yet to Respond
As of now, Bangladeshi authorities have not confirmed the full extent of the damage or announced any security measures to prevent further attacks. The latest assault on this landmark has raised concerns about escalating violence and the future of political stability in Bangladesh.
