In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on April 30. This meeting comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and other diplomatic measures.

Background of the Pahalgam Attack

On April 22, a terrorist attack in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 Hindu tourists and one local guide. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility for the attack. Intelligence agencies have identified Saifullah Kasuri, also known as Khalid, a senior commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, as the mastermind behind the massacre.

India's Response

In response to the attack, India has taken several significant measures:

  • Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty: For the first time since its inception in 1960, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This decision was made during a CCS meeting chaired by PM Modi on April 23. India cited Pakistan's alleged support for cross-border terrorism as the primary reason for this suspension.

  • Closure of the Wagah-Attari Border: India has shut down the Wagah-Attari border crossing, the only road link between the two countries, to passenger traffic. This move aims to curtail any potential threats and sends a strong message regarding India's stance on terrorism.

  • Diplomatic Measures: India has expelled Pakistani diplomats, withdrawn its military advisors from Islamabad, and ordered all Pakistani nationals with SAARC visas to leave the country within 48 hours. These actions signify a significant downgrading of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Pakistan's Reaction

Pakistan has vehemently denied any involvement in the Pahalgam attack and has termed India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as an "act of war." In retaliation, Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian flights and suspended all bilateral treaties, including the 1972 Simla Agreement.

Escalation of Tensions

The situation has further deteriorated with reports of unprovoked small arms fire from Pakistani forces along the Kashmir border for four consecutive nights. India has responded by increasing military preparedness, including missile tests by the navy and heightened air force activity. ReutersThe Times+1Reuters+1

Upcoming CCS Meeting

The CCS meeting scheduled for April 30, chaired by PM Modi, will include key ministers such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The agenda is expected to focus on:

  • Reviewing National Security Measures: Assessing the current security situation and implementing strategies to prevent further terrorist activities.

  • Diplomatic Strategies: Formulating responses to Pakistan's actions and engaging with international allies to garner support.

  • Economic Implications: Evaluating the economic impact of the current tensions and exploring measures to mitigate adverse effects.

Conclusion

The upcoming CCS meeting underscores the gravity of the current Indo-Pak tensions. With both nations taking significant diplomatic and military measures, the international community watches closely, hoping for a de-escalation and a return to dialogue.
