In the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat delivered a powerful statement condemning the terrorist violence that unfolded in Baisaran Valley, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025. During a public event in Mumbai, Bhagwat vehemently condemned the brutality of the attack, revealing that the victims were reportedly asked about their religion before being murdered. This statement from the RSS chief drew a clear line between the values of Hinduism and the terrorist ideology that has plagued the region.

Bhagwat, speaking with anger and sorrow, expressed his firm belief that Hindus would never engage in such barbaric acts. He made it clear that Hinduism rejects violence based on religion, highlighting that the attackers' actions were rooted in extremist interpretations of their own faith, which led them to commit such horrific crimes. According to Bhagwat, this act was not just an attack on innocent people but a battle between dharma (righteousness) and adharma (evil). He poignantly referenced the battle between Ram and Ravana in Hindu mythology, emphasizing that while Ravana was given a chance to reform, when evil persists, strength must be used to eliminate it.

“The pain and anger are deep within us,” Bhagwat remarked, calling for a strong response to the attacks, while also emphasizing the importance of unity within society. He stated that when people are united, no one can harm them, but if someone dares to attack, the society’s strength will ensure that the threat is neutralized. Bhagwat also reiterated that hatred and hostility are not in the nature of Hindus, but neither is it acceptable to endure violence silently. In a battle against evil, strength must be evident, and the nation must be united in this mission.

The RSS chief made it clear that this incident was not about religions or sects. Instead, he portrayed it as a moral struggle between right and wrong. “No Hindu or Indian soldier has ever killed anyone after asking their religion,” he said, making a stark contrast between the values upheld by Hindus and the actions of terrorist extremists who justify their violence by misinterpreting their own religious doctrines.

Bhagwat's comments come at a time when India has escalated its response to the Pahalgam attack. In the aftermath of the attack, India has taken several decisive actions aimed at Pakistan, which is accused of supporting cross-border terrorism. During a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 until Pakistan demonstrates a credible and irreversible commitment to ending its support for terrorism. Additionally, India closed the Attari Check Post and declared Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi as persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country within a week. Further retaliatory measures included the cancellation of visas issued under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) to Pakistani nationals, with a 48-hour deadline for their departure.

Bhagwat’s speech reflects the national grief and anger felt in India following this terrorist attack, which is being regarded as one of the most deadly incidents since the Pulwama attack of 2019. While expressing sorrow, he also stressed that it is crucial for the nation to come together, show strength, and respond decisively to ensure that such terrorist acts are not allowed to occur again. His emphasis on unity and strength resonates with the broader call for a firm and unwavering response to terrorism, as India seeks to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its people from the scourge of extremism.
