The RSS chief delivered his remarks in Indore, calling for renewed focus on affordability and social welfare.
In a strongly worded statement on the state of basic services in India, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has warned that the excessive commercialisation of education and healthcare is depriving ordinary citizens of access to these fundamental needs. Speaking in Indore, Bhagwat said that what were once areas of social service have now increasingly turned into profit-driven industries, placing them beyond the financial reach of large sections of society.
He observed that schools and hospitals, which earlier functioned with a community service mindset, are now often run with the primary objective of generating revenue. According to him, this transformation has significantly affected the affordability and accessibility of essential services, particularly for the poor and middle class.
Bhagwat stressed that education and healthcare are the pillars of a healthy and progressive nation, and any system that excludes large parts of the population from them will weaken society. He expressed concern over the trend of rising tuition fees, the spread of expensive private schools, and the high costs of medical treatment in private hospitals, noting that government-run institutions are often overburdened and under-resourced.
He highlighted that in earlier times, social institutions, charitable trusts, and community-led efforts played a large role in ensuring affordable services, but this spirit has been replaced by a market-oriented mindset. The RSS chief urged both policymakers and the public to reconsider the purpose of these sectors, warning that leaving them entirely to market forces could have serious consequences for social equality.
Bhagwat’s remarks come amid growing national debates over the privatisation of healthcare and education. Multiple reports over the past decade have shown a sharp rise in out-of-pocket medical expenses in India, pushing many families into debt. Similarly, private schools have seen exponential fee hikes, which some parents’ associations have challenged in court.
The RSS leader called for policy interventions that ensure affordability, particularly for low-income groups. He suggested greater investment in public schools and hospitals, stronger regulations on private institutions, and a revival of social responsibility initiatives.
In Indore, Bhagwat’s speech drew attention from educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, sparking fresh discussions on whether India needs a more balanced approach between public welfare and private enterprise in these sectors.
His message, while primarily focused on India’s social service tradition, also reflects a wider global concern: how to ensure that essential services remain within reach in an age of growing inequality and profit-driven development.
Bhagwat concluded by urging citizens to participate in community-driven efforts to provide affordable education and healthcare, stating that “society has the power to bring change when it works together.”
This statement is expected to influence future debates on healthcare reforms, education policy, and affordability measures in the country. It also serves as a reminder that, for a large section of India’s population, access to these basic services remains an ongoing struggle.
