Stress on sustainable farming, veterinary science, and rural empowerment for India’s growth.
At the 28th foundation day celebration of the Jyeshtha Pashuvaidya Pratishthan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasized that the synergy of traditional farming methods and modern technology can transform Indian agriculture into a self-reliant and sustainable sector. The event brought together farmers, veterinary graduates, and agricultural experts, who were felicitated for their contributions to the rural economy and animal husbandry.
Traditional Farming as a Foundation
Bhagwat underlined that traditional Indian farming methods have always been based on sustainability, local resources, and harmony with nature. He explained that practices like organic manures, crop rotation, and water conservation ensured food security for centuries without external dependency. According to him, the wisdom passed down through generations should not be discarded in the rush for modernisation.
Traditional agriculture, he said, focuses on the health of soil, animals, and human beings. Farmers once maintained a balanced cycle where livestock, seeds, soil fertility, and water resources were all interconnected. This holistic system, Bhagwat argued, is still relevant in today’s world where excessive chemical usage and mechanisation have created environmental and health challenges.
Role of Technology in Agriculture
While defending traditional practices, Bhagwat also acknowledged that technology has an indispensable role in making farming more efficient, productive, and profitable. From soil health testing and improved irrigation systems to precision farming, drones, and AI-driven data analysis, technology can empower farmers to get better yields with fewer inputs.
He explained that scientific research in veterinary sciences and animal husbandry has helped farmers improve livestock productivity, reduce diseases, and promote better breeds. Such progress, when combined with farmers’ indigenous knowledge, can strengthen rural livelihoods.
Importance of Veterinary Science
The event also highlighted the role of veterinary graduates and animal experts in building a strong rural economy. Livestock is integral to agriculture in India, not just for milk, meat, and eggs, but also as a source of organic manure, draught power, and supplementary income. Bhagwat applauded the Jyeshtha Pashuvaidya Pratishthan for its contributions to animal healthcare, farmer training, and sustainable rural development.
He pointed out that animal welfare and scientific veterinary care ensure healthier livestock, which in turn improves both crop productivity and farmers’ income. The integration of livestock with crop farming was described as a model of sustainability that India can scale up further.
Self-Reliance through Agriculture
The RSS chief stressed that India’s self-reliance cannot be achieved without agricultural self-reliance. He stated that dependence on foreign technology, seeds, or chemical inputs weakens the foundation of India’s food system. Instead, India should develop indigenous seed banks, promote organic inputs, and invest in homegrown technology suited to local conditions.
Bhagwat also reminded the audience that agriculture is not merely an economic activity, but a cultural and civilisational foundation of India. Rural prosperity, he said, directly impacts national progress, and hence both the government and society must work together to empower farmers.
Farmers, Experts, and Rural Role Models Felicitated
At the event, several farmers, veterinary professionals, and agricultural innovators were felicitated for their work in promoting sustainable agriculture, animal welfare, and community service. Their contributions reflect the grassroots transformation happening in rural India through a mix of traditional practices and modern scientific approaches.
The Way Forward
Bhagwat concluded by saying that the path to agricultural self-reliance lies in integration—not in choosing between tradition and modernity, but in combining both. He urged farmers to learn from science while remaining rooted in India’s indigenous wisdom. He also called upon policymakers, researchers, and civil society to create an ecosystem where farmers are given both knowledge and resources to adopt sustainable and profitable practices.
The message from the event was clear: India’s agricultural future depends on its ability to blend its rich heritage of farming practices with cutting-edge technological innovation. This, according to Bhagwat, is the key to ensuring that Indian agriculture remains resilient, sustainable, and self-reliant in the years ahead.
