Monsoon chaos in Himachal Pradesh claims 109 lives in less than a month

NOOR MOHMMED

    17/Jul/2025

  • 109 people have died across Himachal Pradesh due to rain-related disasters and road accidents since mid-June.

  • 64 deaths were caused directly by monsoon-triggered incidents like landslides, flash floods, and house collapses.

  • The State government has sounded red alerts in multiple districts and ramped up disaster management efforts.

Life across Himachal Pradesh remains severely disrupted as the region grapples with one of its deadliest monsoon seasons in recent years. A state disaster management report released on Wednesday, July 16, revealed that 109 people have lost their lives in less than a month, underlining the intensity and destruction of the ongoing rains.

Out of the total fatalities, 64 were attributed to rain-related causes such as landslides, flash floods, collapsing buildings, and electrocution, while the remaining 45 deaths occurred in road accidents exacerbated by slippery roads and poor visibility.

The affected period primarily spans mid-June to mid-July 2025, with no immediate signs of relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to predict moderate to heavy rainfall across the state.

Major Incidents: Landslides, Collapsing Houses, and Flash Floods

Among the deadliest incidents reported:

  • A landslide in Kullu district swept away three houses, killing at least 8 people including children.

  • In Mandi, a cloudburst led to flash floods, damaging nearly 50 homes and claiming 5 lives.

  • Shimla, Solan, and Chamba districts recorded multiple house collapse incidents, trapping residents in debris.

  • Farmers across Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur have reported widespread crop damage, with apple orchards badly affected.

Public infrastructure has also taken a beating. Over 120 roads remain blocked, while dozens of bridges and culverts have been washed away, cutting off villages and towns from essential services.

Transport and Communication Disrupted Statewide

Due to continuous downpours and ongoing repair work:

  • The Shimla-Kinnaur highway remains shut at multiple stretches.

  • Bus and train services have been either suspended or re-routed, leaving thousands stranded.

  • Mobile networks and electricity lines have been repeatedly damaged, especially in higher altitude districts.

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) confirmed that nearly 400 bus routes are currently non-operational, impacting daily commuters and tourists alike.

Government on Alert Mode: Relief and Rescue Intensified

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has launched intensive relief and rescue operations, aided by NDRF, SDRF, Army personnel, and local volunteers. Temporary shelters have been set up in affected zones, and food packets and medicines are being air-dropped in isolated villages.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed condolences for the loss of lives and stated:

"Our government is prioritizing life and connectivity restoration. Relief efforts are being fast-tracked with district authorities on 24-hour alert."

The State Cabinet has approved an interim relief package, offering:

  • ₹4 lakh compensation to families of the deceased

  • Free treatment for the injured at government hospitals

  • Grants for house reconstruction and crop loss

Tourist Season Impacted; Warnings Issued

With July being a peak tourist season, bookings in hill stations like Manali, Shimla, and Dharamshala have seen major cancellations. Hoteliers estimate a 50% drop in revenue compared to the same period last year.

Tourists currently in the state have been advised:

  • Avoid trekking, river rafting, and forest excursions

  • Follow local advisories and weather updates from IMD

  • Refrain from travel to landslide-prone zones until further notice

Environmental Concerns and Long-Term Risk

Experts and environmentalists warn that unplanned urbanisation, deforestation, and aggressive hill cutting have amplified the impact of monsoon damage.

Dr. Rajeev Chauhan, a geologist from HP University, remarked:

"These rains aren't abnormal, but our preparedness and fragile hill infrastructure are. We’ve created disaster zones by ignoring ecological balance."

With climate change intensifying monsoon patterns, similar events may become more frequent unless sustainable development practices are implemented urgently.

Conclusion: Urgency for Preparedness Amid Ongoing Risk

Himachal Pradesh stands at a critical juncture, facing the dual challenge of saving lives amid an ongoing disaster and building long-term resilience. As the death toll crosses 100, the State and Centre must coordinate more robustly to mitigate future disasters, support the affected population, and strengthen early warning systems.

For now, residents and tourists alike remain on edge, watching the skies and hoping for clearer days ahead
