What's covered under the Article:
- India’s first 200m steel bridge for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will be launched in March 2025.
- The bridge, designed under ‘Make in India,’ will enhance high-speed rail connectivity in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
- A total of 28 steel bridges are planned for the bullet train corridor, reinforcing India’s engineering expertise.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, India's first high-speed rail corridor, is set to achieve a major milestone with the launch of its first 200-meter-long ‘Make in India’ steel bridge in March 2025. This bridge, located near Nadiad in Gujarat on National Highway-48, is a key step in the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) project, which aims to revolutionize railway infrastructure in India.
Key Milestone in India’s High-Speed Rail Project
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor is progressing rapidly, with 28 steel bridges planned across Gujarat and Maharashtra. This 200-meter-long bridge, the first of its kind in India, will enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Ahmedabad while showcasing India’s capabilities in indigenous manufacturing and engineering excellence under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Bridge Specifications and Engineering Highlights
The steel bridge, which has been manufactured at Salasar Workshop near Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, consists of:
- Two 100-meter spans, ensuring structural integrity for the 320 km/h high-speed rail system.
- A width of 14.3 meters and a height of 14.6 meters, providing ample clearance for the bullet train.
- A total weight of approximately 1,500 metric tons, making it one of the heaviest railway bridges in India.
- Tension Control High-Strength Bolts (TTHSB) for assembly, offering a lifespan of 100 years.
- C-5 System Painting, enhancing durability against environmental factors, making it the first bridge in India with this protective coating.
Why Steel Bridges for the Bullet Train Project?
Steel bridges have been chosen for highway, expressway, and railway crossings, as they:
- Provide higher load-bearing capacity compared to traditional concrete bridges.
- Are ideal for high-speed operations, ensuring minimal vibration at speeds of 320 km/h.
- Allow for efficient construction and reduced maintenance costs over time.
For river crossings and general track segments, pre-stressed concrete bridges with spans of 40 to 45 meters will be used. India already has strong expertise in steel bridge construction for freight and semi-high-speed trains operating at 100-160 km/h, and this knowledge is now being applied to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.
28 Steel Bridges Planned for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor
The MAHSR corridor will have a total of 28 steel bridges, including:
- 11 in Maharashtra
- 17 in Gujarat (where six bridges have already been completed)
These bridges span railway tracks, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) lines, highways, and industrial zones like Bhilosa, ensuring seamless connectivity along the bullet train route.
Launch and Completion Timeline
- The first span of the 200m steel bridge will be launched in March 2025.
- The entire bridge is expected to be completed by August 2025.
This project reinforces India’s commitment to high-speed rail infrastructure while demonstrating its engineering and manufacturing capabilities under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The successful implementation of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will set the stage for future high-speed rail projects across the country, bringing India closer to world-class railway connectivity.
