  • Heavy rains since midnight with thunder and lightning disrupted early morning travel across Mumbai.

  • Waterlogging reported in King’s Circle and other low-lying areas caused traffic congestion and delays.

  • Commuters struggled with disrupted transport, while weather officials warned of more showers ahead.

Mumbai woke up to a rain-drenched Monday morning as heavy rains lashed the city, affecting normal life and causing major disruptions in daily travel. The downpour began around midnight with thunder and lightning, continuing well into the morning hours. By the time office-goers stepped out for their daily commute, several areas had already witnessed inundation and waterlogging.

Among the worst-hit areas was King’s Circle, a low-lying stretch that often bears the brunt of monsoon rains. Roads in and around this zone were completely submerged, leading to traffic jams and forcing vehicles to move at a snail’s pace. Reports also indicated that other vulnerable parts of the city faced similar flooding, leaving commuters struggling to reach their destinations on time.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps and emergency teams to clear waterlogged spots, but the volume of rain in a short span of time created bottlenecks. Many residents took to social media to share images and videos of submerged roads, stuck buses, and pedestrians wading through knee-deep waters.

Public transport too faced the impact of the weather. Several buses were delayed or diverted, while local trains – Mumbai’s lifeline – witnessed minor disruptions due to waterlogging near certain tracks. Although train services were not completely halted, commuters reported slower movement and longer waiting times. Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers also struggled to navigate through flooded lanes, leading to shortage of cabs and surge pricing on ride-hailing apps.

Weather officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Mumbai received heavy rainfall since midnight, accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of the city. They issued an advisory asking residents to stay cautious, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding. According to forecasts, moderate to heavy showers are likely to continue throughout the day, with the possibility of intense spells in certain pockets.

For office-goers, the start of the week turned into an ordeal, as traffic congestion stretched across major arterial roads like the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, and LBS Marg. Vehicles were stranded for long durations, while BEST buses found it difficult to ply through waterlogged streets.

The rains, however, brought relief from the humid weather that had been troubling Mumbaikars over the past few days. With the monsoon in its peak phase, citizens are bracing themselves for more such days of inconvenience balanced with the much-needed rainfall that replenishes the city’s reservoirs.

Authorities have urged residents to plan their travel in advance, avoid waterlogged routes, and keep track of official advisories. Emergency helplines have also been activated to assist commuters stuck in heavily flooded zones.

While Mumbai has experienced such challenges almost every monsoon, Monday’s downpour was a reminder of the city’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall and the urgent need for stronger flood management systems. As the day progresses, citizens are hoping for easing showers so that daily life can resume smoothly.
