In a major administrative reform ahead of Diwali, the Maharashtra government has abolished the area boundary norm for document registration in Mumbai, allowing residents, businessmen, and company owners to register property and other important documents at any of the six designated stamp offices across the city and suburbs.

Previously, property agreements, rent agreements, inheritance rights, and other crucial documents could only be registered at the stamp office corresponding to the area of the property or business. This requirement often resulted in delays, inconvenience, and long queues, especially for residents needing to register documents outside their local area. The new reform removes this restriction, streamlining the process for all citizens.

The six stamp offices where documents can now be registered include Borivali, Kurla, Andheri, Mumbai city, and two Stamp Collector offices (Implementation One and Two) near the Old Custom House at the main stamp office. This move is expected to significantly reduce time and effort, simplify procedures, and accelerate decision-making and administrative workflows.

Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule issued a government gazette notification officially launching this reform, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praising the initiative as a step to empower citizens and the business community. The change is expected to improve efficiency for property buyers, renters, businesses, and legal professionals alike.

In a related administrative reform, the Maharashtra government has also empowered Block Development Officers (BDOs) to approve repairs of rain-damaged or silted irrigation wells. This measure comes in response to heavy rainfall and floods that affected several regions, particularly the Marathwada region, disrupting water supply for farming activities. With BDOs now authorised to approve restoration after inspection reports, repair work is expected to be fast-tracked, ensuring timely irrigation support for farmers ahead of the agricultural season.

Overall, these reforms demonstrate Maharashtra’s focus on reducing bureaucratic hurdles, accelerating administrative processes, and supporting both urban residents and the farming community. By removing area restrictions and delegating powers to local officials, the government aims to enhance convenience, transparency, and efficiency, benefiting thousands of residents, businesses, and farmers across the state.
