The Indian mutual fund industry has witnessed a remarkable growth of 39.59%, bringing its total assets to US$ 798.15 billion (Rs. 68,05,000 crore) by November 2024, compared to US$ 571.78 billion (Rs. 48,75,000 crore) in November 2023. This surge is primarily driven by individual investors, who have significantly increased their investments, particularly in equity schemes.

Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) played a crucial role in this growth, with contributions increasing by 48%, from US$ 2 billion (Rs. 17,073 crore) in November 2023 to US$ 2.97 billion (Rs. 25,320 crore) in November 2024. As a result, equity-oriented schemes now represent 59.7% of the total assets under management (AUM), a substantial increase from 54.9% last year. Meanwhile, debt-oriented schemes saw a decline, from 18.5% to 14.8%.

Individual investors now account for a dominant share of 88% in equity schemes, with both retail investors and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) contributing significantly. This trend is reflective of the growing confidence of Indian investors in equity markets, as equity schemes remain the most favored investment option.

In contrast, institutional investors maintain a significant presence in other segments. They dominate the liquid and money market schemes (88%), debt-oriented schemes (64%), and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) (88%).

Additionally, the mutual fund industry saw the launch of 205 New Fund Offers (NFOs) in 2024, which collectively raised nearly US$ 11.73 billion (Rs. 1,00,000 crore), highlighting the growing enthusiasm for equity investments.
