Nadda clarifies VP office was informed of his, Rijiju’s absence from BAC meeting

  • J.P. Nadda clarified that Dhankhar's office was informed of his and Rijiju’s absence from the BAC meeting.

  • The statement came after Congress raised doubts over their no-show before Dhankhar’s resignation.

  • Nadda’s clarification may add nuance to the political row surrounding the VP’s sudden exit.

nion Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, responded to rising speculation and criticism surrounding the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting chaired by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar — just hours before his abrupt resignation.

According to Nadda, the Vice-President’s office was duly informed that he and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju would be unable to attend the meeting scheduled on Monday evening.

This clarification comes in the wake of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s pointed remarks, which implied that the absence of two senior ministers from the meeting was an intentional snub and possibly one of the triggers behind Dhankhar’s resignation.

Context: Jairam Ramesh’s Strong Allegation

Earlier in the day, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned the manner and timing of Dhankhar’s exit from the post of Vice-President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

He stated that Dhankhar had presided over a BAC meeting at 12:30 PM, which was attended by all key members including JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, but when the second BAC meeting was convened at 4:30 PM, neither minister showed up.

Ramesh further claimed that Dhankhar was not informed of their absence in advance, and that this offended the Vice-President, contributing to his sudden decision to resign.

Nadda’s Counter: “Information Was Sent”

Speaking to the media at Parliament, JP Nadda, who is also the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha and BJP president, dismissed those allegations.

He said:

“The Vice-President’s office was intimated about our inability to attend the 4:30 PM BAC meeting. This is a procedural matter, and there was no intent to disrespect the Chair.”

This comment attempts to defuse the controversy, suggesting that the resignation of the Vice-President had no link to the absence of the two senior BJP ministers at the meeting.

Why This Matters: Dhankhar’s Exit Still a Mystery

The Vice-President's resignation on July 21, 2025, has created ripples in political and constitutional circles. While official statements cite "health reasons", Opposition leaders continue to believe there were underlying political tensions.

Mr. Dhankhar chaired the Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee — a key decision-making body for managing Parliamentary business — just hours before stepping down. His resignation letter, submitted late in the evening, took even members of the BJP by surprise.

Opposition Remains Skeptical

Despite Nadda’s clarification, the Opposition parties are unconvinced. Congress and its allies allege that the timing of the resignation, combined with the sequence of events, points to a deeper political discord within the ruling establishment.

Jairam Ramesh stated:

“This speaks well of Mr. Dhankhar, but very poorly of those who got him elected to the post.”

He further insisted that Dhankhar was humiliated and that such actions undermine the dignity of constitutional offices.

Political Reactions Intensify

The resignation of a Vice-President — only the second in India’s history — has intensified political debate during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

While BJP leaders maintain that health reasons are genuine, the Opposition is now demanding a full statement in Parliament to clarify the actual sequence of events and the reasons for Dhankhar’s departure.

There is also speculation that the resignation could be a prelude to a larger reshuffle or ideological differences within the BJP-led NDA.

Parliament Sees Second Day of Disruptions

Tuesday marked the second consecutive day of protests in both Houses. In the Lok Sabha, proceedings were disrupted over the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue. In the Rajya Sabha, the resignation dominated the mood as MPs discussed what appeared to be an institutional embarrassment.

Business Advisory Committee meetings are generally technical and non-political. But the events of July 21 have made it a centre of national political drama.

Conclusion

While JP Nadda’s remarks aim to cool down tensions, they are unlikely to completely settle the controversy over Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation. The Opposition remains vocal, and the public narrative is far from closed.

As the Parliament’s Monsoon Session continues, it is clear that the BAC meeting, Dhankhar’s sudden exit, and Nadda’s clarification will continue to be critical talking points — both inside and outside Parliament.
