  1. NAMTECH and ABB Robotics collaborate to establish a School of Robotics in 2025 to advance automation education in India.
  2. The partnership focuses on bridging the education gap in robotics, preparing students for Industry 4.0 and automation careers.
  3. ABB Robotics brings global expertise and collaboration, positioning India as a hub for robotics and smart manufacturing talent.

In an exciting development for India’s robotics education sector, NAMTECH (New Age Makers’ Institute of Technology) and ABB Robotics have come together to launch a School of Robotics, scheduled to open in 2025. The collaboration is part of an ongoing effort to address the skills gap in automation and robotics education, which is crucial as India’s manufacturing industry embraces Industry 4.0. This school will equip students with cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on experience, readying them for the fast-growing world of robotics.

ABB Robotics and NAMTECH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the school, with a mission to foster automation education in India and globally. The School of Robotics will be the cornerstone of NAMTECH’s broader initiative to develop a world-class engineering workforce focused on next-generation technologies like robotics, automation, and AI. ABB Robotics, renowned for its leadership in automation, will provide expertise, mobilizing its global network of innovation partners and academia to create an advanced curriculum.

Subrata Karmakar, President of Robotics & Discrete Automation Division, ABB India, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "With India's emphasis on education, upskilling, and youth employment, investing in high-quality engineering and technical education is vital for our future." He added that ABB's collaboration with NAMTECH will equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in the new era of automation, helping bridge the education gap in automation and robotics.

The School of Robotics will operate as part of NAMTECH’s five main schools, which include:

  • School of Manufacturing Technologies
  • School of Manufacturing Design and AI
  • School of Sustainability
  • School of Social Impact These schools are supported by global academic partners and collaborate with major industry players to ensure students are well-versed in both theory and practice.

ABB Robotics’ role extends beyond the classroom. Industry immersion, knowledge sharing, and research initiatives will be led by ABB experts, offering students direct exposure to the latest developments in the robotics field. The curriculum will focus on hands-on, industry-focused learning, preparing students for positions in a sector that is increasingly demanding skilled professionals.

In 2023, India achieved a new milestone by installing 8,510 industrial robots, a 59% increase from the previous year, and this trend is expected to continue into 2024 and 2025. India is now the seventh-largest installer of industrial robots globally, reflecting the rapid growth of its automation sector. As the country’s manufacturing sector becomes more reliant on automation, the job market for robotics engineers is expanding, with roles such as Robotics Engineers, Robot Design Engineers, Application Engineers, and Smart Factory Designers in high demand.

Arun Kumar Pillai, Director General of NAMTECH, highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that India's vision of "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) in the manufacturing sector aligns with the school's goals. "This collaboration will not only support the growth of the robotics sector but will also help create a globally competitive talent pool," he said.

With ABB Robotics’ global network and NAMTECH’s educational infrastructure, the School of Robotics will be a beacon for talent development, attracting students who want to be at the forefront of the automation revolution. As the school evolves, its new campus will provide state-of-the-art facilities, expanding the capacity for research and innovation in robotics.

ABB Robotics has a proven track record of contributing to automation education, with collaborations across more than 40 countries, preparing students for the future of work. This India-based school will further solidify India’s role as a leader in the global robotics market.
