A major train accident was narrowly avoided on Monday night when the Nandan Kanan Express suddenly split into two parts due to a coupling failure near Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction in Uttar Pradesh. The express train, which was traveling from Anand Vihar, Delhi, to Puri, Odisha, faced an unexpected technical failure, triggering panic among passengers.
Coupling Failure Causes Chaos
The incident took place around 9:30 pm, shortly after the train had departed from platform number one of DDU Junction. The sleeper coach (S4) experienced a coupling breakdown, leading to the detachment of coaches. As the train split into two, passengers were left in shock, fearing a major mishap.
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes inside the affected compartments, with passengers expressing concern over safety issues. However, railway staff acted swiftly, ensuring that no injuries or further complications occurred.
Railway Staff's Quick Response
Following the unexpected split, railway authorities promptly brought the detached coaches back to platforms 7 and 8 of DDU Junction. Passengers from the affected coach were relocated to other compartments to ensure their continued journey. Engineers and railway staff conducted immediate inspections and necessary repairs before reassembling the train.
The Nandan Kanan Express finally resumed its journey at 1:00 am, after a delay of several hours.
Investigation Underway
Indian Railways has launched a detailed investigation into the coupling failure, as incidents like these can lead to major train accidents if not detected in time. Officials will inspect the train’s mechanical system to determine whether technical issues, maintenance lapses, or external factors contributed to the breakdown.
Passenger Safety Measures
The incident highlights the importance of regular safety checks on long-distance trains. Indian Railways has assured passengers that stringent measures will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Passengers have also been advised to report any unusual train movements to railway staff immediately.
This timely intervention by railway authorities prevented a potential disaster, ensuring the safety of hundreds of passengers onboard.
