National Space Day 2025 was celebrated with immense pride and enthusiasm across India, marking the country’s growing stature in global space exploration. The highlight of the celebrations came from Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to step onto the International Space Station (ISS), who delivered a powerful message to the nation, emphasizing the importance of children’s excitement and participation in achieving India’s bold space ambitions.
Shukla, who recently returned from the Axiom-4 private space mission, shared his experiences and insights during the celebrations. He reminded the nation that India stands at the threshold of a “golden period” in space exploration, with projects such as the Gaganyaan Mission, the upcoming Bharatiya Antriksh Station, and the country’s ambitions for a future lunar landing. These endeavors, he stressed, are not just milestones for ISRO but missions that will define India’s leadership in space technology and exploration.
Shubhanshu Shukla’s Message to India’s Children
In his address, Shukla made a heartfelt appeal to the younger generation. He stated that while scientists, engineers, and astronauts are the ones carrying out missions, the excitement, curiosity, and learning of children will be the true driving force behind India’s future achievements. He urged students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, assuring them that their contributions will be critical in building India’s space legacy.
According to Shukla, “India’s children are the real astronauts of tomorrow. Their dreams and determination will fuel rockets, design spacecraft, and land future missions on the Moon and Mars.”
India’s Ambitious Space Roadmap
Shukla spoke at length about India’s upcoming milestones. The Gaganyaan Mission, India’s first manned spaceflight program, is set to make history by sending Indian astronauts into space aboard an indigenous spacecraft. Similarly, the planned Bharatiya Antriksh Station will be a permanent orbital platform showcasing India’s technological prowess and ability to collaborate globally. Furthermore, ISRO has set its eyes on a future lunar mission, which could place Indian astronauts on the Moon, echoing the nation’s commitment to advancing human space exploration.
He highlighted how international space agencies such as JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and the European Space Agency (ESA) are watching India’s space progress with admiration and excitement, indicating that India is no longer just a participant but a key leader in the global space race.
The Axiom-4 Experience
Shukla’s historic achievement came as part of the Axiom-4 mission, which launched from Florida on June 25, 2025, and docked at the ISS on June 26, 2025. Alongside his international crew members—Peggy Whitson (US), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary)—Shukla spent 20 days aboard the ISS, contributing to more than 60 scientific experiments and conducting 20 outreach sessions with students and institutions worldwide.
The mission not only tested advanced technologies but also gave Shukla an opportunity to document his training, daily routines, and scientific tasks, a responsibility entrusted to him personally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister had interacted with Shukla via video call on June 29, urging him to compile his experience to guide India’s Gaganyaan program. Shukla later confirmed that he completed this “homework” diligently, expressing confidence that the knowledge gained will be “extremely useful and crucial” for India’s future missions.
Symbol of Inspiration
Since his return to Earth on July 15, 2025, and later to India, Shukla has emerged as a symbol of inspiration for millions of Indians. His journey represents the culmination of decades of India’s space efforts and serves as a motivational story for young minds. He is now seen as an ambassador of India’s space diplomacy, bringing together international collaboration, technological advancement, and national pride.
A Golden Era for India’s Space Journey
Shukla concluded his National Space Day remarks by stating that India’s space journey has only just begun. With technological self-reliance, international cooperation, and the passion of its youth, India has the potential to redefine the future of space exploration. He described the present as the golden era of India’s space achievements, a time when dreams are rapidly transforming into reality.
As India celebrates its second National Space Day, Shukla’s words resonate across schools, research institutions, and households. The call to action is clear: for India to truly become a space superpower, the curiosity and participation of its children will be the cornerstone.
