Former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik has called for a judicial inquiry into the alleged sexual harassment of a woman in police custody. The demand comes in the wake of a shocking incident at the Bharatpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar, where police personnel are accused of assaulting an army officer and molesting his female companion.

Incident Overview

On Sunday, the army officer, stationed in West Bengal, and his friend approached the Bharatpur Police Station to file a complaint regarding a road rage incident where they were allegedly harassed by local youths. During their visit, a dispute arose over the registration of their FIR. The woman was later arrested for purportedly misbehaving with police officers and has since alleged that she was sexually harassed while in custody.

In response to the incident, Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania announced the suspension of five police personnel for gross misconduct related to the case.

Patnaik's Response

Patnaik expressed his outrage at the treatment of the army major and his companion, stating, "The manner in which police have allegedly treated them has shaken the conscience of the country." He attributed the incident to the "incompetence" of the BJP government in the state, stating that the current administration's failure to uphold the dignity of citizens is evident.

He further criticized the BJP government for dismantling the #MoSarkar initiative, which allowed citizens to provide feedback on their experiences with government services, including police interactions. "The consequences are visible," he remarked, implying that such oversight has led to the recent incidents of police misconduct.

Patnaik also pointed out a lack of action against the governor's son in a separate assault case, suggesting that this has emboldened others. He urged for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and emphasized the need for rapid judicial action regarding the grave allegations against the army major and the woman.
