The highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport, set to begin operations in April 2025, is preparing to offer the country's first water taxi service, an innovative addition to its already comprehensive transportation infrastructure. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed this exciting development during a review meeting of the CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra). The inclusion of water taxi services is part of the state's ambitious plan to enhance connectivity to the airport and make it more accessible for travelers.

This multi-modal transport system, which includes road, rail, metro, and now water transport, aims to ease congestion in Mumbai and provide commuters with faster and more efficient options to reach the airport. Fadnavis emphasized that the water taxi facility will be the first of its kind in India, making the Navi Mumbai International Airport stand out as a pioneering hub for modern and sustainable transportation.

In his address, the Chief Minister stressed that the water taxi service should be built with fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), a lightweight yet durable material that is cost-effective and sustainable. The FRP water taxis are expected to be both efficient and environmentally friendly, which aligns with India’s growing focus on sustainability in infrastructure development. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also encouraged industry players to focus on reducing the cost of FRP to make the service more affordable and feasible in the long run.

The water taxi service will not only help decongest Mumbai’s roads but also offer faster access to the airport, benefiting travelers who often face traffic jams in this bustling city. By incorporating water transport into the airport's connectivity plan, Navi Mumbai will set a new benchmark in transportation innovation and urban development.

Fadnavis further outlined that the government is committed to ensuring timely completion of all transport connectivity projects, particularly the road, rail, and metro links that will connect to the new airport. He called for careful planning to ensure that citizens face no inconvenience in accessing the airport once it is operational. In addition to improving transportation, the Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of affordable housing, noting that CIDCO should take proactive measures to provide affordable homes for citizens.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. It will play a key role in alleviating congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and boost the region’s economy by improving logistics, tourism, and trade.

In conclusion, the new water taxi service will be a landmark addition to Navi Mumbai's transport infrastructure, complementing the multi-modal connectivity plan envisioned by Fadnavis. As the airport begins operations and the water taxi service rolls out, passengers will enjoy a new level of convenience and efficiency in traveling to and from the airport, marking a major step forward for India’s transportation network.
