Opposition planning to field a non-political candidate, with names including a Dalit leader, a scientist and a Gandhi descendant under consideration
The National Democratic Alliance’s decision to field CP Radhakrishnan as its Vice Presidential candidate has triggered an unexpected political puzzle for the INDIA opposition bloc, which is set to meet today at 12.30 pm at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to finalise a consensus nominee for the election scheduled on September 9.
Radhakrishnan, currently serving as Governor of Maharashtra, hails from Tamil Nadu—a region where the BJP has been eager to build political traction. His nomination is widely seen as a strategic pitch to the southern electorate and a signal of the party’s ambition to reconfigure its presence in the Dravidian heartland.
DMK’s Tough Choice
The move has created a dilemma for the DMK, a key partner in the INDIA coalition and the ruling party in Tamil Nadu. While supporting a Tamil candidate could resonate strongly with its voter base, such a move could also erode its strong anti-BJP narrative and hand the saffron party a powerful symbolic victory.
Opposing Radhakrishnan, however, risks allowing the BJP to portray the DMK as indifferent to Tamil pride, especially since past presidential and vice-presidential contests have often seen regional parties break ranks on the basis of identity.
Examples include:
-
Shiv Sena backing UPA nominee Pratibha Patil (a Maharashtrian) despite being part of the NDA
-
JD(U) extending support to Ram Nath Kovind for President citing his tenure as Bihar Governor
-
TMC abstaining from voting in the last VP election over its differences with Jagdeep Dhankhar
YSRCP Throws Its Weight Behind NDA
Adding to the INDIA bloc’s tactical headache, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party has already come out in support of CP Radhakrishnan, bolstering NDA’s position in the Rajya Sabha. Although the YSRCP is technically neutral and not aligned with either alliance, this endorsement serves as a silent reminder that regional political calculations may override opposition unity.
YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy confirmed the party’s backing and hinted it may remain consistent with its policy of issue-based support to the Centre.
Opposition Considers a Non-Political Candidate
To avert the risk of internal fissures, the INDIA bloc, according to sources, is leaning toward fielding a non-political, non-party figure. Among the names being considered are:
-
A Dalit leader (undisclosed name)
-
A prominent scientist (including former ISRO scientist M. Annadurai, associated with Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan)
-
A descendant of Mahatma Gandhi
By putting forward a consensus-based, apolitical personality, the opposition hopes to retain unity across its diverse member parties while avoiding regional sensitivities.
What Happens Next?
Today’s meeting at Kharge’s residence is crucial. Opposition parties ranging from the Congress and Left to regional heavyweights like the DMK, TMC, SP, RJD, AAP and NCP are expected to participate.
If they fail to reach consensus, the NDA could find itself on a markedly stronger footing—not only numerically, but also in terms of message and optics.
With Tamil sentiment, anti-BJP unity, and political symbolism all converging into a complex decision, the INDIA bloc’s next move will be closely watched across the country.
