Neeraj Chopra Donates Paris Olympics T-Shirt to World Athletics Heritage Collection

India’s star athlete Neeraj Chopra has made a significant contribution to the preservation of athletic history by donating the t-shirt he wore during the Paris 2024 Olympics to the World Athletics Heritage Collection (MOWA). Chopra, who clinched the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the Paris Games, is the only Indian among 23 athletes whose memorabilia have been inducted into the prestigious collection in Monaco.

Chopra's donation adds to the growing collection of athletic artefacts, showcasing the achievements of global champions in the world of track and field. The t-shirt, which is now displayed on the MOWA's online 3D platform, marks a historic moment for Indian athletics, as it becomes a part of the Museum of World Athletics’ vast archive.

Neeraj Chopra’s Silver Medal at Paris Olympics 2024

Despite being a strong contender to defend his gold medal, Neeraj Chopra finished second in the men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics. With a season-best throw of 89.45m, Chopra was narrowly beaten by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal. Chopra’s remarkable performance earned him global recognition, and his memorabilia now holds a special place in the heritage collection alongside other legendary athletes.

Contributions from Other Paris Olympics 2024 Medallists

Chopra joins several other distinguished athletes in donating their Olympic-winning items to MOWA, including Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won the Women’s Athlete of the Year 2024 award. Mahuchikh’s Paris Olympics jersey is also part of the museum’s collection. The donation initiative has been praised by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who lauded the generosity of the athletes.

“We are proud to announce donations from a trio of Paris 2024 medallists: Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Thea LaFond, and Neeraj Chopra,” Coe stated in his announcement. He further thanked athletes who have selflessly supported the heritage programme by donating competition clothing, shoes, and even medals to preserve the legacy of athletics.

The Growing Collection at the Museum of World Athletics

The MOWA is an essential institution that curates and showcases the history of world athletics through the artifacts of legendary athletes. This year, the museum has also inducted historic Olympic-winning items from icons such as Wyomia Tyus, Billy Mills, and Allan Wells, among others. Additionally, world record-setting shoes and singlets from middle-distance runners Filbert Bayi and David Rudisha, along with hurdler Devynne Charlton, have been added to the collection.

These donations are critical in maintaining the rich history of athletics and ensuring that future generations can appreciate the contributions of iconic athletes like Neeraj Chopra.
