The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical admissions, commonly known as NEET UG, is one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance examinations, taken by lakhs of aspirants each year seeking admission into medical colleges across the country.

Following mounting controversy and nationwide outrage over alleged irregularities, authorities decided to cancel the examination and announce a re-conducted test. NEET UG 2026 re-exam likely in June

According to officials associated with the National Testing Agency, the revised NEET UG 2026 examination is likely to be conducted in June. The Director General of the agency had earlier indicated that fresh dates would be announced within a few days after taking into account the academic calendar and other important national-level examinations.

The re-examination is expected to follow a schedule similar to previous emergency re-conducted exams. In 2024, when NEET-related controversies had also led to a re-examination process, the test was conducted on June 23. Students are therefore expecting a similar timeline this year.

The cancellation of the original examination has affected lakhs of aspirants who had spent years preparing for one of India’s toughest entrance tests. Many students have expressed concerns over uncertainty, mental pressure, and disruptions to academic planning.

No fresh registration required

The National Testing Agency has clarified that students will not need to complete a fresh registration process for the re-examination. Existing registration details, candidature records, and examination centre preferences submitted during the May 2026 cycle will remain valid.

The agency has also announced that no additional examination fee will be charged from candidates. Fees already paid by students will reportedly be refunded as part of the revised examination process.

Fresh admit cards to be issued

Although registrations will remain unchanged, fresh admit cards will be issued for the re-conducted examination. Candidates will be able to download the updated hall tickets from the official NEET portal once they are released by the agency.

Students have been advised to regularly monitor official notifications for updates regarding examination dates, city intimation slips, and admit card availability.

Supreme Court plea seeks NTA reforms

The controversy has also triggered legal and institutional challenges. A petition filed before the Supreme Court of India has demanded major reforms in the functioning of the National Testing Agency.

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has reportedly urged the court to direct restructuring or replacement of the agency with a more robust and autonomous examination authority. The petition argues that repeated paper leak incidents represent a serious threat to the rights and futures of millions of students.

The medical body has also requested the appointment of a high-powered monitoring committee to oversee the re-examination process until a new institutional mechanism is created.

CBI intensifies paper leak investigation

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation has intensified its probe into the alleged paper leak network. Investigators are currently examining financial transactions, digital communications, and links between accused individuals involved in the case.

According to investigation sources, students were allegedly charged amounts ranging from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in exchange for access to leaked question papers.

The investigation has reportedly traced the circulation of leaked papers through a network operating in Rajasthan, particularly around coaching centres in Sikar district.

Role of accused under investigation

Investigators claim that one accused individual, identified as Yash Yadav, allegedly helped circulate the question paper through personal connections. Another accused, Vikas Biwal, and his father Dinesh Biwal are alleged to have played key roles in scanning and converting the examination paper into PDF format before distribution.

Sources further claim that the paper was manually copied before being scanned and shared among selected candidates linked to coaching centres.

Several accused have been arrested and produced before judicial authorities. Following custodial remand, interrogation is continuing at CBI offices as investigators attempt to uncover the full scale of the network.

Advance payments and money trail

The financial dimension of the scandal has become a major focus of the investigation. Authorities are probing a money trail reportedly involving nearly Rs 10 lakh exchanged between accused individuals and aspirants.

According to investigators, students were promised that approximately 150 out of 180 questions in the actual examination would match material supplied to them in advance.

Sources also claim that advance payments of around Rs 30,000 were collected from students even before confirmation of the leaked paper’s authenticity.

WhatsApp groups and digital evidence

The probe has further revealed that digital communication platforms were allegedly used to coordinate the leak operation. A WhatsApp group reportedly created by one of the accused was allegedly used to connect prospective beneficiaries and facilitate payment collection.

Investigators are currently examining mobile devices, WhatsApp chats, bank transaction records, and other digital evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Impact on students and medical admissions

The controversy has deeply affected students preparing for medical admissions across India. Many aspirants have voiced frustration over uncertainty and repeated disruptions in examination systems.

Parents and education experts have also raised concerns about maintaining fairness, transparency, and trust in competitive entrance examinations. Calls for stronger security protocols, better digital safeguards, and institutional accountability have intensified following the revelations.
