Authorities in Nepal lifted the curfew on Saturday that had been imposed following violent clashes between security forces and pro-monarchy protesters in Kathmandu’s eastern areas. The unrest, which started on Friday in the Tinkune area near Kathmandu Airport, resulted in widespread destruction, casualties, and a heavy security crackdown. The curfew, which began at 4:25 PM on Friday, was lifted at 7 AM on Saturday after relative calm returned to the region.
Origins of the Protests
The protests erupted in the Tinkune Park area near Kathmandu Airport, where pro-monarchy supporters gathered to demand the reinstatement of the monarchy and the re-establishment of a Hindu kingdom. Demonstrators called for the return of former King Gyanendra Shah, who had recently appealed for unity among monarchists during Democracy Day on February 19.
Tensions escalated around 3 PM on Friday when protesters attempted to move beyond the designated protest area, prompting a strong response from security forces. Police in riot gear used tear gas, batons, and water cannons to disperse the crowd. As violence intensified, police opened fire, injuring at least one protester. In response, demonstrators broke through barricades, set fire to a commercial complex, and attacked media outlets.
Casualties and Damage Caused
The violent clashes resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a journalist who was burned alive and two pro-monarchy supporters. Additionally, 53 police officers, 22 Armed Police Force personnel, and 35 protesters sustained injuries.
During the demonstrations, the following destruction was reported:
-
14 buildings were set ablaze and 9 others were heavily vandalized.
-
9 government vehicles were torched, while 6 private vehicles were damaged.
-
Media organizations, including Kantipur Television and Annapurna Media House, were attacked.
Government Response and Arrests
In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed a curfew from 4:25 PM on Friday, which was strictly enforced in the affected areas. Following the lifting of the curfew at 7 AM on Saturday, security forces remained on high alert to prevent further unrest.
The police arrested 105 agitators involved in arson and vandalism. Among those detained were:
-
Dhawal Shumsher Rana, General Secretary of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP)
-
Rabindra Mishra, a central member of the RPP
However, Durga Prasai, the alleged key orchestrator of the protests, remains at large. According to Kathmandu District Police Range Superintendent Apil Bohara, efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him.
Political Divide and Security Measures
The political landscape in Nepal remains sharply divided between pro-monarchy supporters and opponents. The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) strongly opposes the monarchy, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) continues to advocate for a Hindu kingdom and monarchy reinstatement.
The protests gained momentum after former King Gyanendra Shah’s return to Kathmandu following a religious pilgrimage. His call for unity among monarchists reinvigorated pro-monarchy sentiments, leading to Friday's demonstrations.
Following the deadly violence, the Nepalese government issued a shoot-at-sight order to prevent further escalation. Military and police forces continue to patrol the streets, ensuring that no unauthorized gatherings take place.
Inspection by Senior Officials
In the aftermath of the clashes, senior officials, including Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, the Home Secretary, and the police chief, inspected the affected areas. They assessed the damage and reviewed security arrangements to maintain law and order in the capital.
Current Situation and Security Measures
As of now, relative calm has returned to the affected areas of Kathmandu. However, security forces remain vigilant to prevent further violence. Authorities have maintained a high level of security monitoring in the region, with law enforcement continuing their efforts to track down key agitators and prevent any further disruptions.
While the immediate threat has subsided, the government remains on alert, closely monitoring any signs of renewed unrest. The situation in Kathmandu remains tense, and authorities are prepared to take swift action to prevent any future escalations.
Conclusion
The lifting of the curfew in Kathmandu marks a temporary reprieve from the deadly violence that erupted during the pro-monarchy protests. However, deep political divisions and unresolved tensions continue to pose challenges to peace and stability in Nepal. Authorities are maintaining strict security measures to ensure that such violent incidents do not recur, while political stakeholders work to address the growing unrest in the country.
