Netanyahu defends wider Gaza offensive, Australia recognises Palestinian state

  • Netanyahu defends a broader military campaign in Gaza, indicating scope beyond initial announcements.

  • Australia becomes latest nation to formally recognise a Palestinian state at upcoming UN assembly.

  • Global reactions mount as Middle East tensions escalate amid shifting diplomatic alliances.

The Israel–Gaza conflict has taken a new turn after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the current military operation in Gaza will be wider and more extensive than initially disclosed. Speaking during a televised address, Netanyahu claimed the operation was necessary to eliminate Hamas’s infrastructure and prevent future attacks. He also stressed that Israel would not succumb to international pressure to halt its military campaign prematurely.

Netanyahu’s comments come amid growing international scrutiny. Over the past weeks, humanitarian organisations and several governments have urged Israel to scale back its military activities, citing the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. However, the Israeli leadership has argued that Hamas’s alleged use of civilian areas for military purposes leaves them with no alternative but to expand their operations.

In a significant geopolitical development, Australia has officially announced its decision to recognise a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the recognition will be formally declared at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This move aligns Australia with more than 140 UN member states that have already extended recognition to Palestine.

Albanese emphasised that the decision reflects Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the Middle East. “Recognition is a step towards fairness, justice, and the long-term security of both Israelis and Palestinians,” he said.

Australia’s announcement has been welcomed by Palestinian leaders, who described it as a milestone in their struggle for statehood. The Palestinian Authority issued a statement calling on other nations that have yet to recognise Palestine to follow suit.

On the other hand, Israeli officials have expressed disappointment, warning that such recognition might embolden Hamas and undermine ongoing peace efforts.

The international reaction has been mixed. Some Western allies, particularly in Europe, have expressed support for Australia’s decision, while others have called for more cautious steps to avoid deepening divisions. In the Middle East, the announcement has been hailed by Arab states as a sign that momentum for Palestinian statehood is growing.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Aid agencies report severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, warning of a looming crisis if access to relief operations is not secured. The Israeli military maintains that it allows humanitarian corridors, but aid organisations have said that conditions on the ground make it extremely difficult for supplies to reach those in need.

The United Nations has urged both sides to de-escalate tensions immediately. The UN Secretary-General reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and renewed negotiations based on internationally recognised peace frameworks.

The coming months will be critical. Netanyahu’s vow to widen the offensive signals that the conflict could intensify further, while Australia’s diplomatic move may add a new dimension to the political landscape surrounding the Israel–Palestine question. With the UN General Assembly approaching, the global community will be closely watching how these developments shape the prospects for peace in one of the world’s most enduring conflicts.
