Odisha Expands Connectivity with New Flights

In a major boost to its aviation network, Odisha has introduced new flight services from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar to Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, and Patna. This development, aligned with the state’s New Destination Policy (NDP) 2024, aims to enhance connectivity and economic growth, the state government announced on Friday, January 5, 2025.

Simultaneously, new flight routes from Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda to Hyderabad, Raipur, and Lucknow were also inaugurated, further expanding travel options for passengers in western Odisha.

New Destinations and Operators

The flights are operated by Air India Express and Star Air, both of which are key players in enhancing regional and national connectivity. The inaugural flights from Bhubaneswar to Jaipur and Kochi were flagged off by Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh, while flights to Lucknow and Patna are scheduled to begin operations on January 6 and January 15, respectively.

With these additions, Air India Express now operates 104 weekly flights from Bhubaneswar, connecting the state to prominent cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune, among others.

Ikat Livery Showcasing Odisha’s Heritage

As part of this expansion, Air India Express unveiled an aircraft adorned with a stunning Ikat livery, paying homage to Odisha's rich textile heritage. This initiative not only showcases Odisha's culture but also highlights its commitment to integrating heritage with modern advancements in aviation.

Economic and Cultural Impact

Speaking at the launch, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Transport, Usha Padhee, emphasized the significance of this expansion in fostering tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges. She noted that increased connectivity would strengthen Odisha’s economy, attract investments, and create job opportunities in the tourism and aviation sectors.

The new routes will also benefit professionals, families, students, and naval personnel, enhancing mobility and creating stronger ties across the country.
